Reflections

Another year has come and gone,
Where do they go so fast?
Only yesterday when I was young
The years would last and last.

The mirror on my wall shows things
I do not wish to see,
An older face with lines and rings
Can that face really be me?

Now and then I get a glimpse
Of the girl I used to be
Before the years rolled in and took
the things that made me "ME."

The image in the mirror was
So pleasing for me to see,
And approving eyes followed
When I walked down the street.

But...the years have come and gone
And all that's in the past.
The yesterdays when I was young
Have all flown by too fast.

Now the mirror on my wall shows things
I cannot HELP but see ~
A sad old face with lines and rings,
Looking back at me.

Don't be discourage, You may feel like that now but it get's better. I may be a young one, but grace and beauty is within the heart,soul...not the image. I like how my mother and grandmother has age, they look wonderful...so do you!

Thanks so much for your kind words. That poem was written in 2007, and reflected a really rough patch in my life. Most days, I'm over it! Thanks again, you're a dear friend.

This is very well written, dear Nancy, sooner or later we all notice! So many can relate I guess.
To age well is an art, it has nothing to do with face lifting or such ... it's just the awareness that there is more to us than our withering body. I love ken...'s reply who sees his mother and grandmother as beautiful. Indeed it's not the wrinkles etc. that hide our beauty, it's the bitterness.

I am glad you feel better about aging now!

You write beautifully.

Love,
Margherita

I agree with Ken and Margherita. Age is only a reflection of time. Ask any grandchild  to describe you. When only a young child of five, my grandson gave me the answer. I mentioned to him that I was fat,his answer: "you are not fat,you are my grandmother". If you do not have a grandchild I just know there is some one who has the right  answer to your poem.  latearrival

I agree with the others Nancy. we are as old as we think we are.

"Now and then I get a glimpse
Of the girl I used to be
Before the years rolled in and took
the things that made me "ME.""

very poignant

BTW, it would seem we are neighbors.

To The Lady, thank you for your kind comments on Reflections, Two Old Souls and Silence. I have such great respect and empathy with your writings, that I am honored to have your thoughts on mine. Yes, it would seem we ARE neighbors, perhaps more than just geographically.

Dear Nancy that is so true for all of us, I often wonder where the time has gone and I have found that the older I have become the quicker the the time flits past.
A very enjoyable well written poem.

LindseyP, thanks for your comments on Reflections. That was written at a particularly rough patch in my life...fortunately, I don't feel like that every day!
