SUNSHINE MEMORIES
17 July 2003

Moments around
a truck packed
high and wide and long
with fine, fat bags of shavings
this morning in the sun
on my way to work
had me strangling
my tears
as I saw you again
happy
glowing in the sunshine
standing in deep clean shavings
at your home stables
- and at Auntie Leskin’s
- and the in-between ones
- and at various away ones
during the Yearling Sales -

and your warmth
and love
and happiness
flooded my memories
with hot-teared gratitude
to all those many, many
who knew and loved you
and were responsible
for your wonderful
happy
cared-for
life.

Thank you Kacy, and how I need those memories!  I hope I never lose my memory, because then I wouldn’t have those to cling on to.

Thank you Linda.  Yes, they are so essential to me.

I think the key word in this is "happy"... *S* It's a gift to us to know our friends are happy... and that gift doesn't ever leave us, even during the missing. *S*

I Loved this one because we have had horses in our life and loved them all. I have many fond memories of {stables and stalls and ponies that came to our loving calls.}

Thanks for the great read.

Thank you Ruth.  Yes, Flicka was/is/always will be the epitome of Love and Happiness and it was/is/always will be so obvious to everyone.

Thank you Poetal.  Then you can begin to know how Flicka fills my heart.  He was ours/mine for 20½ years and my children and I knew him and rode him for 2 years before he was ours.  He was 37½ when he went to Heaven, and his vet and his headgroom went there before him and I know they will have met him at Heaven's gate, just as he meets every animal, and the special people.

Oh boy! Ida, you are so right I was/am/always will be so LUCKY, LUCKY, LUCKY!  I don't know why I was blessed with the most wonderful horse in the world of all time and for 20½ years after knowing him and riding him, along with my children, for 2 years before that.  In Life he sustained me and was my comfort in my sorrows and celebrated my joys, and continued to do so from Heaven, but he is also now my Guardian Angel.  As painful as it is to have missed him every day for 8½ years, I bask in the memories and the cloud messages he sends me every day and the daily chats I have with him.  However, there are times, as described in this poem, when an unexpected event jerks a realisation of the fact that those memories can never be reality again, and the enormity of that is almost too much to bear.
