His reinforced aluminum
sturdy-grip cane
timidly precedes him,
its three legs
reminiscent
of a baby Triffid,
uncertain
in an alien
environment.

The twice-weekly visit
of a harried
social worker
barely scratches
the surface
of his age-imposed
needs:
his clothes are dirtier,
diet less varied,
body weaker,
sight dimmer,
mind more forgetful
than a few short
months ago.

Puzzled,
at the foot of the steps,
he has already
forgotten
his destination:
his Triffid
slowly
leads him
into the traffic.

You paint with words the stark reality of life on the streets.
I commend you for addressing their plight in poetry.

I would love to see these in a book with photos above, it would be a wonderful book to refer to in moments of why me, poor me, etc.  Those of us that observe these situations far too often turn a blind eye.

Well done.

Blues, EA, Mysteria:  Thank you for your kind comments.  The "Anger..." series occurred to me when I returned to Canada in 1999, after being abroad for 15 years.  What had happened with the closures of mental institutions, and social care facilities by government, and corporate downsizing and bottom-lining by corporations appalled me.  These are not the streets I knew!
The series tells it like it is, but I wish my words could scream.

You write of your anger well and you show us what precipitated it.  I wonder how many people (that you write of) that we see but choose not to see.

Thank you for letting your eyes roam on the streets and touch our hearts with your poetic reports.

So vivid and poignant.

Alison, Marghetia:  Thank you for you kind words.  Our social safety-net here in Canada has fallen by the wayside over the years, leaving in the lurch those who are least able to cope with the loss.

It's the same here, Ancient Hippie and the numbers are growing due to the economy. You should put all of your keen observations into a book for future readers. That's how we came to know Anne Frank's story you know.

Marchmadness:  Thank you so much.  Unlike Anne and her famous diary, I am not doing the suffering here, other than in a societal sense.  This is something that we all see, but go on permitting.
