Here I am on the wind-swept plains of Nebraska at 06:15 am  behind my computer screen
listening to Marzart on public radio.  It's grey and rainy today all day.
Our pet rabbits are looking out the windows into the yard wishing, no doubt, that they could be out running with their wild counterparts on the grass though it is dark and they can see nothing yet. Our house rabbits know nothing of dogs and wouldn't know to run if chased. They would just stand there and be eaten without thinking there was any danger.
In a few minutes I will scrape the frost off of the windshield and drive to a neighbors to pick him up and head into town. It's grey and rainy today all day. I will listen to the radio to the crop reports and market prices as I have done for years.
I am baking chocolate chip cookies for my wife as a surprise for when she wakes up. I have to keep getting up from writing this whatever it is to check the oven. I cannot resist licking the spoon.
I will pick up my friend and we will meet two others at the local cafe and have breakfast and we will discuss family, friends, auctions, tractor parts, truck parts, lumber and all the other things which we need to know to keep on going. Who is going  broke and cannot pay their bills. Who is flush with cash. Who has what part or wood for what price.
We buy things at farm auctions and store them until we can find some use for them. We have to take what we can get. Then wait for the right time to sell or give it away as a favor. But don't feel sorry for us. We had our chances and made our choices. It's set in stone now and we just have to live it out.
Our children and grand children live in the cities now, and contact us several times a year. It's enough, I think. We have our lives to live and they have theirs. What ever we started, our children will see the end, but we won't.
We will get breakfast and the 22 year old waitresses will smile at us and make suggestive remarks. We will smile back and wish we were young again, but even if we were we would make the same mistakes. One waitress told me in confidence, that they flirt with us because, that way, they get bigger tips. I will not betray that confidence.

I read this with a such mixed emotions.  We can all look back to see where we could have made better choices, but isn't that what makes our future, the knowledge from the past?  As I too grow older I reflect, and something laugh, as you know what - I would have probably still done it the same way.

Loved your Saturday morning reflection of time.
