"Stateside"

Compressed in time, valor stood wounded
Awaiting the Great Healing
or a final peace –
it didn’t really matter much which.

The pain originated in the imagination
not in the nerve endings like everyone thought.
Bitter like unsweetened grapefruit juice
the looks and stares lingered on his palate.
Each stripe on his shoulder
was a year of sin.
But whose sin was the greatest?
- the interloper who took the first step
- the defender who defended without mercy
or Hercules who could not resist the cry of suffering?

The oak tree wailed at him
buffeted by strong end-of-summer wind bullies.
If only they were strong enough not to have to fight.
He leaned against the oak crutch
crying against its coarse bark;
lying to preserve a lie
and living to keep from dying.

It was a long autumn
for an old soldier.
------------------------------------

"Homecoming Beauty"

Inside her smile, her flower faded
carrying on in stillness, alone in face
she talked to herself with gale force
in fits of hail and hell.

It was dawn at torchlight
welcoming travelers with day sight.
She held onto her mane
that blew like loose leaves in fall

With practiced style and mimicked grace
she rolled on with time, holding its hand
and occasionally peeking at the next card
when it was appropriate to do so.

Folks said she hadn’t changed much -
a stone buried beneath the ground
preserved in her past glory.

Burning comets in her eyes
told tales, tall and otherwise:
when batons were scepters,
accolades were breakfast,
that she got very used to
and was required to possess her.

The makeup of her character was over-painted
turning back past moments in her mind.
Today was yesterday’s lexis that
she couldn’t pronounce.

She drew heart pictures in the sand
and married a furniture salesman
with worn souls
on his feet
and seemed happy enough
as he lovingly called and regaled her as
his Homecoming Beauty.

are you writing a book, Jeff?

Could be one easily~~

Love reading you again. Hope all is well.

Life here is just "lying to preserve a lie
and living to keep from dying."

Jeff:  Thank you very much for this well-written and intriguing piece of art.  Two very different, and fascinating cameos.  I am left wondering, "what happens next?"  and hoping that another posting by you will tell me. Great visuals here, compellingly crafted.

Hey, Maur!  Hows my buddy these dayz?
I hope you're still doing some teaching or working with kids.
We're OK here- had a major setback healthwise but much better now.

You are right, as usual: I'm sectioning my work into three books:
The Blue Light of a Dove- spritual work
Life Stories- story poetry
and the last is a series of poems about children and their experiences and perspectives.

Thanks, sweetheart, for checkin in.  We miss ya in Indy, Maur!!!

Mr. Hippie,
much obliged for the visit, and sorry if I short-changed you a bit on the outcome of each story-poem.

I try to post a dual-poem with a common theme, and the vignette was about how things we embraced early in life have a completely different meaning later on.
T'anx again,
Jeff

Two vividly descriptive vignettes. You are quite the writer, Jeff! I'm pleased to see that you are working on three books! A talent like yours needs to reach out and touch as many people as possible!
