As Darkness Falls

As darkness falls,
--slithering through the bewitching woods,
a forceful wind is beginning to billow.

The pungent scent of decaying leaves
is carried by the damp, musty air.
I am startled by the piercing, luminous eyes of a hoot owl
that is perched upon a skeletal branch of an oak tree.

Chills run up and down my spine as animal sounds
echo throughout the barren trees.
With the rising of a waxing, harvest moon,
the woods are bathed in a pumpkin-orange glow.

This welcoming sight floods me with a sense of calm
and I become one with the night

--as darkness falls.

Loved this poem, Artic.

I often feel at one with the night, as I am its apex predator. :p

Though my hunting grounds are more of an urban setting. xD

And all the roads that I've been strolling down... now I've found they all seem to be marooned. So profoundly doomed.

This poem and the picture provided are are super. I feel just like I am rigth there in the forest.
We don't have any forests out here on the wind swept plains of Nebraska so I really like hearing about them.
My wife is desabled now and cannot travel, but we are hoping that they can find the right medication "cocktail" that will help her recover.
Rocky Mountain National Part is a place we love to visit and we have an old camper.
Thank you so much for the lovely write!!!

Again you caught the magical atmosphere reigning in the night, dear Michael.

Wouldn't dare to be alone in the woods at night ... brrrrr

Funny, just yesterday afternoon my son showed me pictures from one of his mountain bike tours and he pointed out how dark the forest was sometimes and how it chilled him somehow, when sunshine and blue sky were not able to filter through the tall trees.

Love and hugs.

Gbride, oh totally. Especially for camping. This poem really does explain the creepiness and darkness of the night in the rising of fall.

I tried to really explain every sense (part of a challenge that Sunshine gave me) she opened many doors for me in my writing.

Thanks again

Wow, the imagery in this is just breathtaking, my friend! It seems you share some of my primal instincts as well!

Yep, I'm a night owl myself, and the way you conjure up that pumpkin-orange glow of the harvest moon especially enchanted me, as I have many fond memories heading out into the middle of a pumpkin patch with my sisters to gather pumpkins for carving Jack-O-Lanterns with! Plus it only highlights just how hauntingly ethereal the general colors and scents of autumn truly are!

Yay, this is spellbinding, my friend! (huggies)

Thank you so much!!!!!! ~ I am so happy that you liked it. I am totally a night hawk myself. I love talking about the night and our mother moon. I wanted to really express the darkness of an autumn night. Of course, it could go both ways. I mostly touched upon the scary aspect of the night and brought upon the Mother Moon to bring the character into sudden calm.

Another thank you for your loving replies!!!!! I am so happy now.

Jwesley, I took the picture off the net, but there was no name to give the credit towards. I've loved this photo for some time now. I don't know if its a composite or not.
