The path is worn and beaten down from the summer sun.
The oak trees tireless in the heat of day
stretching their limbs over shallow ponds,
draped in the shade.

Warm beads glisten on bare backs
the rustle of leaves carry in the still breeze.
A splash of memories run deep
sweat and tears fall at my feet
stirring my emotions.

Like a cart wheel turning over and over
when stones skipped further
and our hearts grew fonder.

I can see your eyes in the shadows
hear your laughter in the distance
as if it were yesterday.
Of long lazy hours on end,
of golden sunsets and starry nights.

Even now I feel the angst and the joy
the bittersweetness that we were.
As my heart retreats in the offing of Autumn
when August gives way to a September sigh.

It's hard to believe that September is already here.

I enjoyed the emotion in this piece.

And all the roads that I've been strolling down... now I've found they all seem to be marooned. So profoundly doomed.

Bittersweet is the feeling in this beautiful poem.
Your style lends itself perfectly here.

I sit and swing after gardening while listening to memories on the radio~~ know this feeling, Lori.

I can't believe the weather change in just 2 days here.

Hoping you are not anywhere near those fires... keep safe.

One of my favorites of yours. I loved how you tied in emotions and feelings with the seasonal change. You really described the summer heat perfectly and longing for septembers autumn.

powerfully emotive 'write' ! ...

fine summer's-end imagery ...

"Even now I feel the angst and the joy
  the bittersweetness that we were.
As my heart retreats in the offing of
Autumn when August gives way to a
  September sigh."

... rather a "slice of every-person's life" ending

well done ... much applause for this 'penning!!

Bluesy - don't know how I overlooked this write, but I'm glad I found it. This is you, writing your thoughts...

I read this earlier.  Now I've read it again and think it should go up again.  Lovely write! I'm in the grip of a September sigh and never in my life have I ever gone to bed at 8.00 pm but that's where I'm off to.  Those sighs are exhausting!
