Over the Tracks

Growing up with money and
all the pretentious emotions it brings,
it was a long step when
I crossed the tracks.
Perhaps I was just young,
and foolish enough to
find my dreams somewhere
over the rails.

She had hair as black
as her daddy’s coal stained face
and eyes that knew how
to whisper to my soul.

She gave meaning to the word grace,
when she walked, holding her
books close to her breast.
I always felt feint when her eyes met mine
and she gave me that smile she
saved just for me.

Her clothes were modest
and she never had makeup,
but there was a pride in her manner
that belied her social status.
No sharp edges of anger or resentment
Only an ache to find
more for herself in this world.
I found in her realness, a honesty,
That was missing in my life.

At seventeen, we fell in love.

One of the sad facts of any
young mans life is that there
are forces at work that he can’t control.
Futures are laid out, paths made to follow,
and they don’t always leave room
for his heart.

I knew we couldn’t escape
the tragedy that was coming
but I was to young to tell love no.
When your whole life is a struggle
and you finally find a haven
in the heart of someone who
will stand with you,
the ending just doesn’t matter.

We straddled the rails,
hand in hand, we walked,
listening to the roar
of the oncoming train.

Yoin,

This is great.  I really like your poetry because you take me some place I haven't been.  Know what I mean?  This poem is like that to me.

I do know what you man Alison. Many times when i write I close my eyes. Either with pen or keyboard, I just let my fingers type what my head and heart are feeling. closing my eyes takes me to the images or story that I have inside. Later I will fix everything on the paper/screen.
