She didn’t stop to look amazed
at the progress of the flame
from slow to fast and furious,
from loving to indifferent,
and from belief into the chasm
of uncertainty.

Instead she stopped to look amazed
at the wind of happenstance
that reduces love’s tall stature
to the likeness of
liquid candle wax.

Breathe!  She breathes and yet the wind
moves quickly out from deep within
into the world where candles stand
burning. burning, burning.

And she lights her loving candles
to look amazed again, again,
at the melt and solidify
after the flame has died.

From what love was to what it is
and she sighs before the cast aside
of the distorted and disfigured
made useless by the flame
and the wind of happenstance
brought up from the depths
of his or her or my
unbeknown and inherent
wilful intent.

Helen,

I am just having one of those not being able to sleep nights that I sometimes get and now I think I stayed awake for your poem. You have this way of writing that just reaches out and holds me as I read.  It's not something I can really explain, but I like it.  This is amazing work.

Hi Alison, I sure do know about sleepless nights!  Thank you so much for your kind comment.  I've been away and have missed Pip but more missing to come as I'm moving house again.  I do not intend to move ever again!

Hugs

Thanks so much, everyone.  Candles literally may become a permanent part of my life in view of an expected very high increase in electricity costs here but of loving candles, well, I've come to know the very many different kinds of love and some of them are still burning.  I'm so grateful for that.

Heh, popped in for another look. Sorry to hear about the electricity thingy. Maybe had Tesla lived another 50 years it might have been free for all to use. I think we take electricity for granted here in the States, as if it were a constitutional right. On my island you are lucky to get 3 hours a day. Glad I left there. I'm growing fond of air-conditioning.

Hi, Honey! Long time no bee! Ooops! no "see"!

There is a quiet wisdom to your poetry. Always a joy to read.

"the wind of happenstance" is capricious!

Hope all goes well with your move!

Brett - How lucky you are to have air-conditioning!  It's one of the things on my list but I reckon my list will carry on to the next life.

Linda - Bees I can do without but I put the welcome mat out for you!

Sue - The only rose I get is the one on your reply but how lovely it is and I'm grateful for it.

Thanks.

This piece reads as if I were standing in the doorway watching her think these thoughts and express the sentiments.

It's like a verb on pause
