the face that I had loved so well
lost in nod's misty rivers
as I looked long by the railing
so utterly lost
in her

bowed serenely in larkish prayer
the changeling was unaware
slipping through time's filmy chaplet
wreathed by fireflies and melody
she fell

into inevitable chrysalis
babyhood flickered
in that last exhale
furled smoke emerged
ocean-eyed
flutterby

I wept to wet her wings

H

I wrote this for my daughter on her 5th birthday.
Was thinking mommy thoughts today, about how she would be 10 this year, and yep, cried again. I seem to break down in five year cycles.

Beautifully written.
Enjoying watching your child's wings spread each day is the most wonderful part of being a parent.

Shel
Thank you so much. I know you are familiar with the heart I wrote this with.

Yes it is, but bittersweet. I tell my children "If I could just have you at age 3 for a day" or "If I could only have you back in my arms brand new so I could smell your newborn skin". My daughter asked me once, "Wouldn't you miss the me I am today?"
Well of course.

Thank you both.
Love,
Heather

Incredibly beautiful and touching, dear Heather. I am spellbound. I have felt this too and my mother before me ...

Oh ... something shivers within me ... and oh, no!
