I opened a forgotten tome to a page that showed
Whittier, who once wrote long ago
That of sad words from tongue or pen,
The saddest are, ‘It might have been’

I pointed her to this thoughtful decree
Spelled out so well and carefully
And hesitated, afraid to make unclear
The point of which I wanted her to hear

She gazed first with those luminous eyes
That traveled from first the page, to meet mine
An instant became forever just then
As the words resounded, ‘It might have been’

In that brief hesitation bathed in her glow
It was then and there that I came to know
That of sad words that shall echo eternally
The saddest are in truth, ‘It used to be’

Oh boy is this ever the truth!  However, the older you get you learn somehow to just let it go, and deal with the here and now.

Well done!

I read in a biography of the poet and author Thomas Hardy that he once saw a lovely young woman in a carriage and thought to introduce himself. But he became shy and walked on by. He always wondered after that what might have been. great poem. I liked it very much!

How heartbreakingly true!!! Maybe it's better to have loved and lost than not to have loved... but you KNOW what you're missing.

Incredible!

This poem of yours is wonderful. So well written. In fact, reading it brings up old feelings long buried and I think about what might have been and what used to be. It makes me long for things I can no longer have. But I have to force myself to remember that it was all a learning experience. Now I must look foward and not think on what might have been and what used to be.

Nicely done
