Tiger trouble

Distant, far away in cold Siberia
Where snowy woods meet stark and icebound plains
Where misty mountains merge with rivers dancing
It's there the mighty Amur tiger reigns

The days are long and tough in winter forests
The air is yet to yield to springtime breeze
The frosty skies are sullen, grey and heavy
Yet sometimes fearsome tigers take their ease

Mother Tiger's watchful eyes keep vigil
Despite her drowsy look and soft-sheathed claws
Protector of her cubs, she'll guard their safety
And shield the little one beside her paws

In time this cub will be the empress
And heiress to the lands where mum now rules
But just for now, she'll watch and learn and listen
And romp through thickset woods and icy pools

Siberian Tiger is the name they gave her
Yet few have seen her in her wild domain
She has a beauty, mystical, uncanny
A life of freedom we as humans must sustain

But still this cub's too young for worries
Today such problems seem a world away
For now she'll simply rest and be contented
And inbetween there's time to run and play

Oh, I love tigers! ... at a certain distance of course or on a t-shirt! ... or my mini-tiger cat who can be quite ferocious too.

Another piece of wonderful poetry which resounds so profoundly with my feelings.

A joy to read and a spectacular picture!

Love,
Margherita

Hello Katriona, I so much love tigers in wild, we have to make efforts everywhere to save them...Your poem is wiseful and I am sure if tigers had consciouness they will commit suicide knowing human role in their quick disparition... Nice write..very enjoyable to share.

Thank you Margherita, and to think there are only about 330 of those beautiful animals left in the world, mostly in zoos of course.

Yes Yann, we must and I'm doing my best, a couple of years ago I was heavily involved in the tiger saving operation in the Amur region of Siberia, where the Russians were building the new pipeline that was intended to go right through the main breeding area of those rare Siberian tigers.... can you imagine it ?  Anyway, it was stopped by intervention from foreign and domestic animal rights organisations.  I'm glad to say I know the Russians have become much more aware of the treasures they have in their back yard.  When I was in the region about four years ago, there were only about 35-40 of those beautiful animals left.

I often donate to a sanctuary for big cats  near here. Some very sad stories on how they ended up there. Thank you for caring about the magnificent animals and writing  about them so lovingly.

Katriona, as exquisite as your poem and the picture is (and I absolutely LOVE them both), so much more beautiful is your heart.  Thank you so much for being instrumental (and I am sure you will say yours was only a small part, but EVERY part counts) in stopping the pipeline.

Currently, my legs are being sat on by a tiger - well, a Tigger - a very beautiful tabby Tigger.

Oh please don't remind me Ida, I know what's going on, it's terrible, and unfortunately many are not being caught.
So kind of you to think of those who can't protect themselves.  Thanks for stopping by m'dear

Thanks Owl, that's very considerate of you to say so, but I think it's our duty to help where we can.  I don't know about SA, but in Norway it's now a criminal offence not to report even suspicion of animal abuse going on, but of course it's very easy to find excuses for not doing so.....

Awe....missed this one, Katriona.  This is new, I suspect.  You have written about one of my favorite animals in the world, though I truly do just love them all.

They are so gorgeous and have such a wonderful sense of family.

Dear Katriona, you have written a beautiful poem about the most magnificent animal on earth. A great picture to enhance those
caring words. I have been an animal lover all my life and have seen all the big cats

in Africa in the wild. Although my wife and I travelled through Siberia we were not lucky enough to see a tiger in the wild.
Keep up your great writing Katriona, I loved it. Love

Thanks you kindly Lindsay, no I'm afarid you wouldn't see many of those Siberian tigers in the wild any longer, there are only about 30-35 of them left sadly.  However, there are breeding programmes going on in several wild life sanctuaries, so let's hope we'll see them in their real and home element one day soon.
