Lei It On The Line
By: Noah Eaton
6/17/07

Everybody wants to be as free,
as a mynah bird in a banyan tree,
casting their cares to the tradewinds,
and the white ginger blossoms by the sea,
everybody dreams to board the Aranui,
get stranded with the Marquesians to your heart’s delight,
wade in the secluded river pools by day,
and strum ukuleles on the port deck by night.

Life is in a gentle breath of wind,
here there ain’t even a flea to bite,
we’re stuck like pilali gum to the kukui tree,
in this hypnotizing Pacific paradise,
you better believe the sugar cane fields are tasseling,
when those sweet Hawaiian babies roll their eyes,
so work that Waikiki wiggle room,
and go lei it on the line!

For breakfast we’ll have a bowl of breadfruit,
and for dinner we’ll have poisson cru,
and go yaddie kaddie kiddie kaddie like Hilo Hattie,
‘til we get all wicki wacki wooed,
and go scuba diving deep all across Taiohae Bay,
where the parrot fish flutter in royal regattas,
hoisting our sails and letting it wail,
like the humuhumunukunukuapua'a!

(How do you pronounce that again?)

Do I dare put on that blue muumuu,
weaved for me by my Aunty Leilani?
they say these drowsy Honolulu nights,
make chickadees trill like Luciano Pavirotti,
so I slipped on that blue muumuu,
my pair of Havarinas and my paniolo hat,
and hung out with the locals at Duke Kahanamoku’s,
and sipped back on a chief’s calabash.

(Non-alcoholic, that is,
you sneaky tiki!)

We can spend a balmy afternoon,
parasailing all around the Tuamotu Islands,
watching native farmers harvest black pearls,
and trek the ancient tiki highlands,
from what I’ve experienced firsthand,
we’re all hula goons deep down,
so strike the drum volcano deep,
and shake your body all around!

(And we sang:
Yaaka hula hickey dula,
yaaka hula hickey doo!
Yaaka hula hickey dula,
in the misty morning dew!

(Hu-la la!)

Maybe it’s something in the guava chiffon cake,
maybe it’s that moon of Manakoora,
that gets your cunning and running humming faster,
than a squirrel revival in Pascagoula,
so listen with the ears,
observe with the eyes,
leave your bashfulness at home,
and go lei it on the line like a blue tail fly!

(Olu Olu!)

(May day,
may day,
it's lei day,
ah ha ha!)

Aloha dear Noah!

Now I am smiling all over after being lifted into this Hawaiian atmosphere by you.

A beautiful song, a time to be carefree ... not even a flea!

Enjoy your time, I enjoyed your poem!

Love,
Margherita

Awwwwwwww, thanks soooooooo much Margherita!

I was at Yoshida's Sand In The City to volunteer over the weekend. It's the largest annual benefit for a non-profit group in Portland called Kids On The Block, which teaches positive life lessons to children through the art of puppetry. They reach over 70,000 Portland and Vancouver-area children annually, and is one of my favorite festivals in Portland.

Anyway, on Saturday they had what's called the Loke Luau, which is one sub-feature of the festival. It incorporates Polynesian music, dance, food, beverages and atmosphere into Pioneer Courthouse Square during the Sand In The City spectacular. I actually took this straw wall hanging and turned it into a grass skirt, LOL! I also went overboard painting my face for the occasion, because after all, what use is it going to a luau if you don't get dressed up for it? Then other volunteers followed my lead!

You can see a video of me hula-dancing there via the link above, yay! Hope you had a great weekend!

Awwwwwwwww, thanks James!

I think I was born a son of a son of a sailor! Either that or I wear my skin over a pink crustacean suit and don't even know it!

You always write awesome island anthems too, my friend, yay!

"Lei It On the Line" ~ What a cute and clever title!
Gosh, Noah, I think I gained a few pounds reading about all those tasty delectables! Yum Yum

You sure know how to mix business with pleasure! You look like you were having a fun time! You have so much energy that I would suspect that people get electric shocks when you touch them! lol

Another delightful post, Angel Boy/Man!

Yay, thanks a bunch, dearest angel friend!

It's quite ironic how I'm fixated on eating purely, yet my poems have all these references to super-sweet delicacies that are often highly-processed! Curse me and my effortless ability to foment cravings for Polynesian cuisine among many here!

Yep, ever so often my peers will say "Noah, you're a machine!" or "Noah, you're a volunteering mastermind!". They too say how inspiring it is to see some like me so emotionally behind their work and inspiring others to put an element of pleasure behind the task and live like there's no tomorrow. I guess you can say I work hard and play harder!

Thanks sooooooooooo much, dearest Linda! (huggies)

Love,
Noah Eaton
