The creeping hours have caught
Me unaware.  Through my window
Spills the dawn and lemon
Summer air like some full tide
That bears the coloured barque
Of day, rich-laden on its breast

Above the lawn a cypress lifts
Its sable sword in dark salute
To speed the morning moon and bid
Adieu to night

Sweet Peas and Blue Wisteria cling to eaves
And curled Azaleas poise like yellow birds
Of paradise

The sun has yet to open wide
Its weary eyes to paint mauve shadows on the grass
With fingertips still wrinkled grey with dew
So no bird sings

But on my senses steal the first faint scent
Of earth and newly opened wings
And leaves; the breath of blossoms
Lingering like a lover's kiss
Upon the lips of morn

And I am loathe to think
This magic hour in sleep would pass in vain
So waking thus becomes my joyful gain…..

Wonderful imagery, dear Katriona! Yes, to be there in those moments so magically rendered by you here, I would sacrifice some extra sleep!

This echoes in the heart, dear Poetess.

Margherita

this poem is beautiful...

i especially liked this:

But on my senses steal the first faint scent
Of earth and newly opened wings
And leaves; the breath of blossoms

That's about the sweetest reply you could ever give me dear Lindsay

PS:  So happy they found that young English lad who had gone amissing in the bush !  Must have been terrible for his poor parents (and himself).  Quite distressing that youngsters go backpacking so unprepared into the wild environment.  Must have cost a fortune for the rescue teams as well to look for him for two weeks. Well teenagers will be teenagers. I should know with mine

hello heart2heart, this is so detailed and colored, it seems I walked there and smelt perfumes and saw the vivid sun bringing its joy...even if I am not familiar with the vocabulary I appreciated the beauty of the words and the sensations evocated...Great work.

Every line was exquisite and its almost a shame that I am only quoing two of them ~

"The sun has yet to open wide
Its weary eyes to paint mauve shadows on the grass"

May your every day of every summer be as glorious as the one you have so beautifully painted in this poem.

Love & Summer Light,
Linda
