Sometimes I wonder what remains
To mark the life we lived
What legacy is left behind
What grains the hourglass sieved

It seems to me we’re soon forgotten
In this wild world
And only now and then a little
Memory unfurled

Will they remember me
For all the sacrifices made?
And will they know the burden of the
Bitter debts I paid?

I do believe our lives are but
A blip across the screen
One leaf that’s’ undefined across
The hills of forest green

But there is one thing that I know
At times the tears will swell
When they recall that they were loved
So deeply and so well

And there’s a legacy I leave
That lives from age to age
It is a sketch of heart and soul
Upon a poet page

Some day a curious child may pull
A book from off the shelf
And find my legacy to be
A mirror of himself

I am thinking all the very same thoughts too.  I sometimes wonder fleetingly if all the sacrifices were worth it, but usually decide they were.  It is what we can give while living to others, that will in the end be the things they remember most.  It is always the love, the one thing that costs nothing to give in the end.  When they touch something we have given, or think of a word we have said, that is when they remember.  It appears we are forgotten doesn't it, but on the contrary, we will always pop up no matter who we are in the mind of some one, some time, some day.  And, so it goes, and so it goes.

Still doesn't stop those of us aging from thinking we will be forgotten though.   Thus my signature, dear Lizzie.

Seems we're of like mind of late, Lady Santos.
I've been doing a lot of wondering,
myself.
Were I to go back again, with the chance
to change anything...
I think all I might do is strive to be
smarter, and love more...

and that means hugging the children harder!

Elizabeth,

How gracefully you put your thoughts and the thoughts of many into a such a lovely poem.  I adore your entire poem, but was especially pleased with the last stanza and

"I do believe our lives are but
A blip across the screen
One leaf that’s’ undefined across
The hills of forest green"

A stunning keeper indeedy...

I have been thinking this too, thinking who in my past in my personal life, or the world, has left a mark, a vivid memory that outshines all the rest, and I came up with my grandparents and the love, the kindness they gave, not just to me but the whole community where I grew up.

That is what is lost today, people grow up have to move away, when I drive to see my parents, I go back to that same small town, and I am always confronted with others who knew my grandparents and they tell me stories that I have never heard, just little bits and pieces....

More than Elvis, Kennedy, or anyone or anything that has impacted me, it was my Grandparents and their legacy still alive today!

Children are our testimony to all that we cherish, suffer for, and dream
