I walked wearisome through the night
Not knowing where footsteps led
Drawn like a beggar who lost his sight
Far from where fear is fed
I saw nothing at first, nor heard a sound
Deaf and blind like a newborn
While the world without me continued ‘round
All that I beheld seemed forlorn
Then there was a light far away
That grew clearer in the cold night air
I realized then, though I cannot say how
That the light was from candles held in prayer
A church loomed into my closer view
Some sort of solemn service
While black banners in night breeze flew
What manner of church was this?

The thought to enter I could not dare
So strange was all this before me
Yet the urge was more than I could bear
To examine for myself, my own eyes to see
And as I crossed the threshold in awe
I beheld mourners, countless faces veiled
In rows upon rows at first was all I saw
Down the aisle my eyes then trailed
And I, knowing no hint of shame
Walked brazenly towards the altar
All lit by a thousand candle flames
As I noticed a coffin, I began to falter
Its top half panel opened wide
Still too far to see just yet
I did not want to look inside
My palms dripping wet

But I knew, as much as anything
That I was brought here by fate
And I must do this one thing
Before the hour draws too late
So, with a deep resigned breath
I peered down inside to descry
My inner self in blissful death
A part of me that has died

CG, words fail me. This was a gripping, outstanding piece of writing. I experienced each step with you. The closing blew me away.
I am still reeling from the impact of it.

May ye find thy inner peace whilst ye still be of living flesh,

EA

A perfect storm depicts the inner light.  This is a prayer answered quietly and succinctly.  Bravo, dear Poet.  A keeper to my library.
