Lumpy oatmeal makes me crazy!

0 posted 2009-07-08 01:36 AM

she was in middle of the road
morning temperatures
already unseasonably hot

cars whizzed by fast, too fast
driven by people who didn’t want to go
where they were going
music loud, National Public Radio blaring,
Rick and Bubba confronting.

and she was in the middle of the road.

sandwiched by four lanes of drivers
swilling lattes, bagels clenched
in one fist, steering wheel in the other
eyes riveted forward, not noticing
the small robin flinching
unable to fly or move

maybe others saw her,
i doubled back,
stealing the bus stop

nesting her under a blanket,
we trusted each other,
as i  moved her from the road,
to the grass, under a tall spruce tree,
in  the quiet of the shade

food was still clutched in her beak
for nestlings who waited
and maybe worried

as i did all day

until i, once again,
stole the bus stop
walked  off the road into the grass
and looked under the spruce tree

she was gone

Talk about believers! Oh Alison dear, you have no idea. Can you follow this link? Let me know please. But before I paste it let me compliment you on your rescue and the poetic way you have recounted it.

Thank you, Kacy, SEA & Linda.  I couldn't stop thinking about her last night, so just jotted down the poem.  Maybe someday someone will see a bird in the road and realize that they might only be stunned.  Perhaps, they will stop and help it out.

Anyway, it was just the right thing to do.

I love you guys.

You were this robin's Angel, dear Alison. You took a great risk yourself to save him, but this little birdy heart will spread his wings in deep gratitude ...

So lovely. You rendered this event very vividly.

Love,

Tears of happiness, Alison.  When I saw this title, I knew it was about the robin you told me about in the email, and I opened it in fear and trembling, but fortunately the news was good.  Usually birds are stunned for about 30 minutes, or in my garden anyway, when one very occasionally flies up against a closed window.  Because there are no dangers here - but could be a sparrow hawk or cat, though there hasn't been in these incidences so far - I leave them be, so as not to frighten them further (but watch carefully as they recover, ready to frighten off any bird of prey or cat who may appear while they are recovering), but I am so glad you lifted the darling little robin to safety because I fear what may have happened to him/her if you hadn't.  I know that he/she will have felt and understood the love and care with which you did so, and will have loved you back with a gratitude that only a darling little bird can feel and I know that you will be blessed for your wonderful, compassionate act.  Thank you, and I am glad the news was good.  Beautiful poem, too.

Yo dear Alison,

This reminds me of two kids I saw last year while I was walking the dog.  They were carrying a pigeon with a broken wing home.  They were going to take care of it.

I just hope their Mom let them keep the pigeon.

I’m sure she did.  Moms around here are good that way.

You sound like me, Alison. Anything that needs help around here finds it's way to my house or to my daughter's around the corner.
She is currently caring for 5 abandoned kittens.

I saved a baby ovenbird in my yard the other day. He was cute. His parents yelled at me though, they got back with some caterpillars just as I was climbing the tree with him.

Thirty bits of glass had become my teeth,
They were breaking each and every time I tried to speak.

You know, each reply is so special to me - normally, I respond individually, but this time.  Well, this time it's about the robin.  I love that you all 'got' this piece.  She was on my mind that night when I wrote this - and I wanted you all to see her.

I hope you did.

Love,
Alison

Allison, you always lighten up these pages... If she flew into danger, she knows just how exactly she will turn to the right direction.
