Drumming

On the offbeat they sing, as he drums the native drum
As their voices lace together sinew of falling sun,
Sinew of falling sun, vibrations of leathers hum
He renews his energy while drumming some to sum.

The softening of the head where song-thoughts bleed
Wears a vision of a dancer in deer skin tread,
Knows all, sees all with beat of un-it-y;
Perceptions revealed, some which shouldn’t be.

Brave man, Pure man, sees beyond the sun
Satisfied to live his days, one by one.
The drumming is almost over; the men shall part,
Yet, the power of the drum is sustained in his heart.

As voices lace together the sinew of falling sun,
He renews his energy while drumming to the sum.

YES! This is gorgeous cathy. It has great rhythm. I can hear the drums as they make my body sway, and feel the warm sun on my face.

"Sinew of falling sun, vibrations of leathers hum
He renews his energy while drumming some to sum."

Brilliant write, lady.

Kacy,

I'm glad you liked it!   I've been wanting to write but nothing would come to me.  Then tonight, I thought of my husband and his drumming.   He drums weekly with a group of six or seven men on a very special drum blessed upon its creation.  We recently found out that the particular drum maker blessed it and placed a particular type of medicine within the drum.   Sometimes the heartbeat of the drum possesses the ability to visually create a Native American "singer" on the head of the drum.
(My hubby just read this, and I stand corrected!  They see a singer, not a dancer!)

I suppose a drum head could portray a dancer, so I'll let the poem stay as it is.

Thanks, Kacy, for your kind comment.  It's good to hear from you again.  Be well, my friend.

hugs,
cathy

I can feel the thrum of the drum in the primal beat of your poem! I have been hoping that now that school is out for the summer that you would be seeing more of your poetry ~ and your sweet presence!

I absolutely adore this! I love drumming myself and have thought of making my own. Your husband must be very impressed with this! ~ I certainly am!

Giving you a big, warm welcome-back hug,

Linda

Dear Misc, how good to have you back! I think the power spirit of the drum has inspired you most beautifully.

I am impressed, also by your note. A precious object that holds a meaning beyond the visible, maybe captured in its sound.

Love,
Margherita

Stirs the native blood,
and flows like music
tom-tom on the drum,

Earth Angel,

Am I not surprised that you have drummed?   I hadn't thought of you as a drummer, yet, now I can see it very well!   I understand there is a certain spirituality there, and I can easily visualize you drumming, offering your thoughts through song or chant.   Wow!  Just to think about the power behind that drum!  Earth boggling!

As to making your own drum, go for it!  A couple of years ago, we made one and donated it to the local museum for school aged children to use, as well as other replicated artifacts.  The challenge was to get the head on the drum nice and tight, but it was a very satisfying experience when the sound came alive.

It has been so good to hear from you!  I hope all is well with my little angel!

Margherita,

Yes, I've seen the power of the drum through my husband.  I don't understand it, but I know it is there, strengthening him.

Thanks for visiting, my sweet friend, Margherita.  It is always good to read you.

Bloodline,

I appreciate your stirring response.  Yes, flows like music, tom-tom on the drum...

This reminds me of the Indian and Eskimo drummers here in Alaska.  What a wonderful poem, Cathy.  I am glad that you have been inspired because I miss you.

Alison,

I miss you, too.  I don't know how much I can be around because I made a commitment to read and critique a novel a friend of mine is writing.  I'm such a slow reader and worker, I tend to imagine I'll have to get ready to go back to work before I get anything finished.  I'll bop around here as much as I can to see my special friends.

Glad you've had the opportunity to hear the native drumming and enjoyed my snippet.
I smell grilled cheese burning, so I'd better head out!

Hugs,
Cathy
