The following was written last Christmas when my dog of 13 years became terribly ill. He had to be put to sleep a couple weeks later. Being there for him and watching him to the very end was one of the most painful things I've ever had to do.

-----------------------------------------------------

It has been many years
Since I looked upon you, Death,
And I hoped it would be many more.
I still remember vividly, the time
I saw you from before.
Your vision never left me, though
I thought that it had faded,
I never shook the grim terror in me
That you created.
And now I look upon you again,
You've come to take my faithful friend,
And I cower here, defeated.

Dear Alan, intense write remembering the pain. Yes, it is so difficult to let them go, our pets become a member of the family and we hurt terribly.

But know that he is in a beautiful place now, I just know, because my cat Mizar who moved on made that clear.

Love,
Margherita

Thank you Marg. I still remember how hard it was to see him deteriorate, and yet every time he saw me his plaintive eyes looked up at me and his tail wagged and I knew how much my presence meant to him. I wrote this poem to motivate me out of my selfishness and cowardice so I could be with my loved one in his final moments.

Condolences..feels like such a weak word.
Heart hugs, for the loss of your beloved dog.
Pets capture our hearts, and when they leave, it can be devastating.

Thank you Midnite.

I've lost people in my life very dear to me, and yet this loss stung me like no other. I'm still quite sore about it. Curious.
