The correct answer

* * *

She looked out for him,
her heart bursting with love.
Before the ocean
of impermanence
was going to swallow
the flood of her certainty,
she wanted him to know.

With a tremor inside
she let the words fall from her lips
aiming straight at his heart.

“I love you”!

In his eyes she detected
a spark of recognition
and a distant smile
as he quickly uttered

“thank you”!

A single tear
hung in her eyelashes.
It held both
love and sorrow,

for she knew
that the correct answer
would have been

“I love you too!”

Sometimes "thank you" just isn't enough but it's good that he knows.  Insightful write, dear Margherita.  One can cry for the "she" and also for the "he" because the turn-away could in the end be disastrous.  Who knows really?

Oh, Margherita, I once got a "Thank you" when I bared my soul to a man I was falling in love with. He was rather a stiff Brit but I eventually warmed him up and when he finally said "I love you" to me, I said "Thank you" ~ and we both cracked up laughing!

You spill illustrious ink in a variety of colours, Dolphina!

The correct answer rests in silence, of course love knows how to read them. Your poetry on the feeling is beyond phisical world but works on a spiritual level.

clever talks delay friendship!

Yes, Margherita, a very painful reply fraught with the weight of much sadness.  I particularly loved Kushal's reply.

Margherita, this is a sweet piece. I think "ocean" and "flood" have been used a bit too much, and "flood" doesn't bring a lovely image to mind, I tend to think more of flood the ugly disaster. Beyond the first stanza, the visuals are subtle but vivid, I like the "eyelashes." Thanks for sharing.

Yes, dear Sue, when we feel not corresponded a little sadness does creep in no doubt. Thank you so much for your loving comment.

Thank you, dear Helen, you are right, how do we know really. Some may say "thank you" and still mean "me too", but they somehow fear to say it as they feel too much exposure makes them vulnerable.

Yes, dear D., this is surely true, totally unconditional love is the noblest feeling we can have. But I believe we love to hear the answer we long to hear, maybe even subconsciously. Thank you for visiting and commenting so kindly.

Dear Kacy, thank you, yes it's indeed heart talk, on soul level probably we know how things are ...

Dear Angelo Terrestre Linda, that was a funny reaction! You are a cutiepie of course. Thank you so much for your sweet comment.

Thank you so much, dear Katriona, so we are on the same wave length with our emotions.

Dear Shellie, it's a pleasure to have your approval of my thoughts, yes this happens ever so often, I am sure! And it is open to different interpretation. Thank you so much.

Dear Ida, your comment felt like a big tender hug. Thank you from my heart.

Double thanks, dear Katriona! You brought a smile!

Dear Bill, thank you so much, gentleman. You understand, being a true expert in love matters.

Dear Adagio, thank you so much for reading and commenting so kindly. Yes, the distant smile hurts!

Dear Carmen, it seems to happen often ... though we shouldn't "measure" love, we all wish it was manifested as "immeasurable"! Thank you so much.

Just so, dear Bobby. But when we listen to our heart we surely find the right things to say. Thank you so much.

Dear Kushal, by "correct" of course I mean the "longed for" answer. Ok, silence can be read by a heart who loves and it can be a beautiful experience, but oh the music of love words rolling from the lips ... Thank you for coming here and for the beautiful comment.

Thank you so much, dear Diana. It's as if you listen to a beautiful symphony and you miss the most intense notes of it ... yes it hurts, even though it can be open to more than one interpretation, as I said.

Dear Billie, yes the honesty is to be appreciated, it helps not to weave further paradisiac dreams. Thank you, dear Poet friend.

Dear Marc-André, enjoyed your visit and your comment. Isn't there also a positive meaning to flood? i.e. "flooded with grace"? Thank you, I appreciate your remark.

Dear Yann, thank you so much for telling me you loved this little poem. Well, I guess who replies like this can be considered honest, but it hurts anyway when it happens.

I dedicate this poem to all those who go through such experiences, where indeed we feel "not loved enough". But let's go on TO LOVE, anyway. And when it is true, LET US SAY "I LOVE YOU" often, because the receiver likes to hear it, no doubt.

Love and hugs to all and thank you again.

I guess for him it wss the correct answer
and for her it revealed the truth
for you it uncovered your understanding of the human heart
and for us it was a powerful little poem that drew mwemories from long ago surrounding those three words
Excellent, dear poet

Thank you, dear Steaven, for stopping by and leaving your kind comment. Nice to have you back on Pip, you were missed.

Dear Rae, I am touched by your loving reply. Thank you so much.

Dear James, thank you so much for appreciating my thoughts. In love matters, it is so important to be honest, so we know where we stand. "I love you too" is the most desired for reply no doubt, but we can cope with honesty even if it hurts.

Dear Liz, thank you so much, for the gift of your heartfelt comment. Yes, I guess these are experiences we all sooner or later make in our lives. You are right, it was the correct answer for him and her heart felt like a dry land wishing in vain for the rain (in that moment).

DrK&7, thank you, I appreciated your comment. Welcome to Pip!

Three words can move a mountain of pain to an ocean of joy. How beautifully expressed, dear Hal. It's true. Thank you dear for coming in. It would be nice to see you around more often.

Love and joy of love to all.

This is poignant.  It's hard to put ourselves out there like that - and, if he couldn't say he loved her back, he handled it beautifully.  The power of "I love you" and the gracious "Thank you" leave me hope that they will share friendship and a love that builds.  Perhaps not the love she desires now, but a love that lasts through the tears.

I love you, Margherita.
