When I Grow Up

A Fireman, Police Officer, a Race Car Driver,
A Doctor, Nurse, or a Deep Sea Diver,

Remember when you were five or ten,
How far back can you see?
Was your childhood full of fun and games?
Were you planning on what you would be?

A farmer, Carpenter, or Construction Supervisor,
A Mechanic, Lawyer, or a Financial Advisor,

How often our dreams are shattered,
And hopes of what may have been,
We grow up to be something different,
Than anything we could pretend,

An Actor, Accountant, or News Journalist,
A Salesman, CEO, or a Dental Hygienist,

What is it in us, that makes’ us change?
Why don’t our childhood dreams come true?
We all have the best intentions,
And desires of what we can do,

A Baker, Pilot or High School Teacher,
A Butcher, A Poet, or a Sunday Preacher,

If we could go back to when we were young,
And know, what we know now,
Would we change our minds completely?
And plan our lives differently somehow?

When I grow up, I want to be an Astronaut,
But,,,, I refuse to grow up!!!

What do you want to be?

The answer is always NO, Until the question is asked.

I want to be one of those facinating old women that people wonder about.  Live by the ocean in a trailer with a bunch of dogs that I walk on the beach.  I will have many college degrees, but will work as a waitress in an old run down coffee shop that stays open twenty-four hours.  I'll write poetry in the middle of the night drinking coffee...and never let any one know any of my secrets.

Clang, This is the first I have seen of you, yet I think I know you.  We have kindred spirits.

Thanks for your wonderful reply.

Tracey, I absolutely love this! This topic is near and dear to my heart and I have written many children's songs and poems on it.

I see the little boy is still alive and well in you! Just last evening I was talking to a friend on the phone and she reminded me that I had once said to her that I wanted to be a little girl when I grow up! lol ~ and voila! I did!

Actually, I did become all that I set out to be ~ a nurse, an artist and a writer. Oh, there was one more thing ~ but I'm still working on that one!!! ~  A movie star! lol lol lol

Love to you, Big Boy!

Thanks Linda,  We often ask "What if"?

I wish I had made many different choices, but I am pretty happy with my life as it is.

Take care,
Tracey

I always wanted to be a teacher when I was little. And when I entered college I even started out down that path. But through experience I learned that teaching just wasn't for me and so I tried another path after some serious soul searching. I think the reason our childhood dreams don't always come true is because we learn the truth about things through experience and then our dreams change to ultimately get us what we really and truely want.

Hi Tracey, a great poem you have written their my friend but nowhere did I see where

you wanted to be a poet, and what a great poet you turned out to be. But there again

you come from very good poetic stock.
Much enjoyed.

Yo Tracy,

This is a good poem.  I like it.

You will be happy to know, I've realized all of my childhood dreams.  I can't think of one that I haven't.

Well, dreams don't always turn into reality. If they did, I wouldn't be where I am today.

This is a wonderful write, dear Tracey. You seem to remember to perfection what every child dreams of.

Some of my favorite fantasies were nurse (but when I endured a six week sojourn in a hospital when I was six it was over with that one ...), ice queen ... still I dream sometimes of me being light and full of grace (my last time is buried in the past!). And so much more ...

Thank you for making me dream again ... probably it is impossible to manifest ALL our dreams, but a few maybe yes. Yes, I also dreamed of writing and at least this I still do for my pleasure.

You did a great job with this one.

Love,
Margherita

Hi! Son;

I just love this poem, you have done a great job. As you know by now I haven't done much with my poems lately but you will be interested to know that I am working on a few that go back to "My Fabulous Four"  I too remember some of the things you "'lil monsters" wanted to be, and why I have so many gray hairs.

love to all

Mom

P.S.  Don't worry I wont tell too much.

Thank you all, my dear friends, and Mom, for your kind responses to my poem.  I am so happy it may have taken you back a little to relive your childhood dreams.

I hope your dreams come true, and you are able to fulfill them to the fullest.

Love always,
Tracey.

If we could go back to when we were young,
And know, what we know now,
Would we change our minds completely?
And plan our lives differently somehow?

My answer to those questions changes, depending on my mood of the moment. *S* For I have many regrets, made many poor choices... and still... most of the time? *S* I like who I am now... even if it's not who I wanted to be. *S*

Wonderful work! *S*

I wanted to be a ballerina. Then a figure skater. Then a writer. Then an actress. Then an artist. Then a singer.

Now all I want is to be happy.

That was a very nice poem.

if I named all the things I wanted to be growing up it would take a long time... but I have fullfilled many of my dreams so far and I have a ways to go.
I always say never give up on your dreams as long as you live you can still make them come true it's all up to you .

I loved this poem though it's great!!!!
