The pulpit trembled as the hand came down upon the blessed book.
With a stern dire man driving the hand, the congregation all did look.

When the point was made the holy ones rage seemed to ebb and flow.
Of sermons made and sermons thought, the gathered
just wanted to go.

The preacher later stood at the temple gate with blessings for his flock.
As they slowly moved on past this Sunday last, his handshake like a lock.

He turned away at the last goodbye by with his thoughts on an impending chore.
A baptism at "two" that won't take long and a christening at four.

All is quiet now it's Sunday eve and he settles down for tea.
He eats alone no partner shares his heartbreak or his glee.

He eats alone three times a day and ponders on his plight.
Unlike the brides of Christ he thinks who will have sisterhood tonight.

A lost solitary man who bears the woes of humanities life long grief.
But must wear the mask of enlightenment to foster his flocks belief.

Monday's funeral went as planned and his face was compassions mate.
But as he walked slowly away his thought that day, was that he understood life too late.

Freeze, ta muchly, you gotta think that some souls cast as preachers to humanity are lost sad souls, always servant never master to their own lives...Paul.

This is a great, impressive description of what a Preacher can feel. The first stanza with that hand coming down put me immediately in the "adverse" position. The "pointing finger" type! Then you see him as a lonely man and in the end as a man who is unhappy with his choice of becoming a priest.  You got that character well, there are many in this situation, I fear. True vocation to serve as Christ intended, are rare. Now, many see it just like any other profession with a manageable program.

I feel sorry all in all for "your" Preacher.

Good job.

Love,
Margherita

Thanks Margy, the theme of "lonely in a crowd" or "solitary amongst many" befalls us all at one time or another, but ongoing emotional isolation is hell on earth I would imagine...thanks...Paul.

Lots of very strong images here - he reminded me of the Vicar in "Jamaica Inn" (a wonderful book, by the way) - but he was not evil, just lonely.  Good writing.

A great poem, very moving.  I would hope
the precher would find comfort in the great
work of the Lord.

Prayer is the comfort of the soul.
