Sitting in the afterglow
of a searing summer day
sipping a cool one,
feet up on a lounge chair,

waiting for flickering fireflies
to hover over blooming flower beds.
I take the luxury of a mauve moment
to ponder the poetry of life.

Chippie the resident chipmunk rushes off
to his hidden drain-pipe cubby hole
as overweight Robin searches frantically
for a late night moveable feast.

Time stretches into eternity.
My mind savors these precious moments
as if they were pure amber honey
gifted by benevolent nectar gods,

waiting for flickering fireflies.

Yo Kacy,

This is a nice poem.  I think we have fireflies here in the city.  I've seen them late at night.

We don't have the same kind of fire flies out west where I have lived most of my life, but for a time I lived in New Jersey and we would watch for them just as you have done in your very nice poem.

Oh my, how beautiful, dear Kacy! One of those moments to share, no doubt. And I thank you for this!

The last time I saw a flickering firefly was, when I lived out in the country. I enjoyed this wonderful poem.

Much enjoyed, especially the first stanza, where I'd end the poem. Still, a delightful read.

I have recently seen fireflies for the first time in a long time.
I missed them.
And I love this reminder to sit back and enjoy them.

Kacy.... this poem is like siting alongside you as you see the wild and beautiful things of nature....how much can we see if we just watch for a little while during our busy scheduled life? Thank you for this...

Oh, my!  Kacy!  This was a perfect, perfect moment!  Like spending time with Flicka; like reading his cloud messages and discussing them with him - especially the beautiful ones today; and is pure, unadulterated joy!  I have read it 3 times and enjoyed it more each time!  This is living life to the full.  So many people get it wrong, but you get it oh so right!  Thank you for the peace and joy this brings!

Look at all the poets who cherish fireflies!
Thanks for sitting with me to catch the night show. We've only had a few fireflies visit but it's been a very soggy June so far.
A shy elusive toad is hanging around somewhere among the rocks and plants.
Summer...yes, it is definitely summer!

As a kid we use to run around the cow pasture with gallon jars, chasing the twinkling stars in glee before settling down for a night under clear skies ....

of course we would release them after dark, blending into the Heavens!

Thank you for the memory!!  : )

midnite...when you're from the deep south, you learn to look forward to the Fall.

I do not have fireflies, but I can count on you. I'm so sorry you're not feeling well, but I wanted you to know I can still see your spark.

(and oooooooooooh, I was visited by a sphynx moth last night...and that has happened for years.)

a good sign

Love you lady.

We are so in want of patience
and observation
we fail to enjoy and savor
the small things
- to our peril

Thanks, Kacy, for all your
patience and your observations.

I'm waiting for them too!
I enjoy them even more now then when I was a kid.

Oh I love fireflies, I used to catch them in a jar when I was little, just for that evening and then when I was going to bed, I would let them all fly and be free out through my bedroom window....

maybe I'll come over one evening and we could sit and have a cup of sweet tea, lemonade and just sit back and wacth the beauty all around us....

Hi Di!
I scared the poor little toad when I moved the rock he was under. No problem though, he just found another rock nearby.

Kacy I have taken so long to respond to this, because I was hunting for a picture I took in Kit's backyard in Ontario.  I had never seen a firefly before, and was determined to catch one and bring it home.  Well that we know would be impossible, but nonetheless I was determined, so off I went.  I caught one alright, and then it was either Ron or Nan told me their bootie is what lights up and I had only that in my hand. Eweeee.

Anyway you brought back one of the fondest memories I have in my collection.  Sitting in that yard with it literally on fire with little lights is right up there with the sandman.

Beautiful poem, I kept it for our family time capsule.

Carpe' Diem,
Mysteria
