He was a handsome shepherd boy
Who softly walked the pastures green;
His flute he played so sweet, so low,
For all to listen and enjoy,
Though rarely was a list'ner seen
As breezes shook the barley-o.

He danced along the cliffs so tall
And sang and whistled with the breeze
As water swirled and foamed below.
He threw round pebbles, saw them fall
And disappear with magic ease
Or bounce upon the breakers-o.

One morn he walked along the beach
While whisp'ring waves washed round his feet
And not a breeze would stir or blow.
A maid he spied, sat out of reach,
A green-flecked rock her boudoir seat,
And merry seemed the morning-o.

Her hair was long, down to her waist,
Her eyes were bright as cornflow'rs' hue,
Her smile was shy, and comely so.
At once he loved this maid so chaste
And knew his love would e'er be true
And happy were his feelings-o.

She bade him play his merry flute
And sang to him a song of love
Till suddenly with no ado
She fell as silent as a mute
And with a sigh filled glance above
She dived into the water-o.

The shepherd boy, without a thought,
Was swift to follow in her wake
And followed her down deep below;
Down deep below he swam and sought
Until his lungs began to ache,
Far down beneath the surface-o.

And then she swam into his view
And kissed him full upon the face;
She would not let his body go,
She would not let him bid adieu
Until his pulse forgot to race
And then she left him floating-o.

A mermaid cannot understand
How mortals need to taste the air;
Thus love must always end in woe.
The shepherd drifted back to land
The mermaid's dirge was sung with care
As breezes shook the barley-o.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
