My long endeavor to befriend,
my foe of old must find an end,
but though it soon be I declare,
such end is neither bright nor fair.
For I will not again approach,
nor vainly give a sound reproach,
in hope of causing her to turn,
from thinking me a thing to spurn.
Nor will she even if I chose,
to persevere for such repose,
permit her heart to therein judge,
its inner cause for causeless grudge.
Therefore no effort will persist,
for harmony will not exist,
no, not between me and my foe,
for she despised me long ago.
