It's almost like i'm swimming in place
My hand goes out to cover my face
I've seen myself, i know i'm here
I've walked these streets alone in fear

Everyone else just doesn't seem real
Seems i'm not in touch with how i feel
The bullets pass bye as i duck my head
I look to the ground, another soldier dead

I'm back at home and they know where i've been
But they have no idea just what i've seen
I can't relate so i just sit and stare
There's no place for me, not here or there

A car door slams and i fall to the floor
My buddies laugh and ask for more
They want to hear about my crimes
How many people i killed during my time

They have no idea just who i am
They think i'm cool, such a man
But nothing at all feels real to me
They have no idea just what I've seen

I'm swimming in place and drowning in fear
I can't afford to shed a single tear
Don't look at me, don't try and speak
If i open up you'll know i'm weak

My hand goes out and i touch her skin
Can't feel a thing, outside or in
She want's to know just what is wrong
I show no smile, it's been to long

I bury my head and close my eyes
This shallow face is my disguise
She walks away and slams the door
Hollers back "I Can't Take No More"

Alone again i hear the attack
I've traveled down to hell and back
You have no idea just what I've seen
And i won't tell, i'll keep this clean

These dirty secrets, they're mine to keep
They steal my soul and kill my sleep
What happened there i'll never tell
But i'll tell you this "War is Hell"

this was amazing! everything you wrote is so true, i remember my grandfather used to jump at the sounds of planes. you depicted it brilliantly.

You have captured the true thoughts of a soldier who has return from a war. My buddy returned from Vietnam after fighting on the MaKong Delta for three years and stayed in his bedroom for nine months before he came out in the sun. While in that room he rebuilt a flathead V-8 Ford motor for his 1933 Plymouth Roadster and when we took it out we couldn't go thru the door, instead we removed the window and lifted it out that way. We had a ball running around in the car all that summer of 1968.
