"No!" cries the child.
The mother cries as well;
anger and tears
painting the cry,
as the mother tries to give
what the child doesn't want.
Living her life
through the child.

"This way." says the mother
"Under my watch you will grow
straight and tall
like a cultures pine."
"But I want to be an aspen,
or a willow.
A thing of beauty and grace,
unfettered by the chains
that make the pine so straight.
Austere guidelines to grow in
could never be my fate!
I want to bend with the wind
and let my leaves and limbs
dance!"

"Fine" says the mother. "Go your own way."
"Though, if I had my choice,
I would even be the river
by which the willow grows.
Eternally graceful;
never dying
like the tree one day must give way
and return to the earth."

"Fine" sighs the mother. "Choose your own way."
"Or maybe the earth
where the trees go
whe they die.
They lay down the weary limbs
on my bed of soil,
made feathersoft with age.
I would comfort their dying
souls. Sheltering.
I want to be the earth!"

"Fine!" shouts the mother. "Just go away!"
"No! Wait!" cries the child. "I know my path!"
I will be the ocean;
crashing against the shore!
Power that the earth has;
Grace that the river has;
Dancing as the willow does;
Even the tides;
Rules that the pine has.
I will be the ocean.
I will be everything and nothing;
Powerful and peaceful;
Friendly and dangerous;
Beautiful;
A tempest.
Ocean!"
The child smiles.
"I am the ocean."

A very thought provoking write, as really we are all of these things combined.  Enjoyed this very much.

Wow, i loved this. Beautiful metaphors and stunning imagery. Makes a very interesting read. Love the lines:-

'A thing of beauty and grace,
unfettered by the chains
that make the pine so straight.'
