I lay waiting
In my bed
For my sister to say goodbye
She opens the window
Half climbs out
Turns to me

Bye
She says

Be careful
I say

Ok mom
She says

She climbs out
And
Silently
Shuts the window.

I hear a car drive off.
I close my eyes and wait for the inevitable.
Sleep, sleep, sleep

3am
The phone rings
I hear my mother talking

I get up
Look into the hallway
My father is holding my mother
Like a hurt child.
I feel so confused

My mother is crying?
She never cries…
Well it looks like crying

But it isn’t
There are no tears
Just sobs

She sees me.
Sweetie,
She says,
It’s your sister…

I stare at her mouth open
in a wide O
My sister?
She can’t be…
No .
I just saw her.
She went to another party.

We drove to the hospital,
In silence,
Except the occasional
Sob of my mother.

We ran to her room.
Getting strange looks from nursing staff.
Did it really matter?
Do we really care?

I see her
In a hospital nightgown
Golden hair
Crusty with blood
Bruises everywhere.

Only hours ago,
Days it seemed,
She had called me “mom” for warning her

I now see the bigger picture
She had tubes everywhere
Everywhere

The doctors says we have to choose
Whether to keep her on life support
He is saying we choose
Life or death
For my sister.

My parents ask the odds
Of her ever waking
He says slim,
Slimmer to talk
And even slimmer to walk

I run out of the room
Out of the hospital
I run into a park and
I lie on a bench
Crying
Dying
Wishing
Pleading
That no she isn’t dead,
Or on life support.
But I know
That it is no use.

I walk back in
The hospital
The room
And sit down on an old leather chair

My parents have made their decision
Die

I sit in an old leather chair next to a coffin
After the service
After the priests
After everyone else
Where my sister sleeps
Unbruised
Unbloody
Just her
In her white night gown
Looking younger than me.

I tell her this:

My sister
My love
My guiding star
You died young,
In early bloom,
Mom
Dad
And I
Shall miss you with all our hearts.
But as you always used to say
“ Just because the host isn’t there doesn’t mean the party shouldn’t go on.”
I hope you go to the better place.
Where you will party every night with
All the popular people.

And that every second feels like a warm hug from mom.

I'll miss you.

This was one of the most powerful poems I have read in a long time. I almost didn't want to reply to it, for fear of lessening it.

Very moving, right down to the last word. With lots of respect, good look with future poems x Lee
