The pick claws the coal from the rich face
It falls like Manna from the darkest heaven
Automatons fill the trucks at such a pace
Shifts of hours of more than eleven.

Merciless owners regale in extricating more
At the expense of those they employ
Their existences being the antithesis of poor
While lives of wives are easy to destroy.

Men who hew with all their might
Do so thus women and children can thrive
Oblivious to the deep, dark cavernous night
With futures of many so easy to deprive.

No coal dust adorns the long palatial halls
Where the stench of profit permeates the air
No one cries at the sound of distant falls
In a world that is unilaterally unfair.

Not what we were promised, huh. Great grand-dad swung a coal pick many times so's his son could be an itinerant engineer instead. As for the rich supplanters and their thugs, they have their reward.

Indeed, the way of life - but if it doesn't kill you, it'll only make you stronger.

There are places in the heart that do not yet exist; suffering has to enter in for them to come to be - LeonBloy
