Darkness.
Such a beautiful word.
I hold it to my chest
like a baby,
even though it claws at me;
rips gouges in my heart.
I hold tight and whisper,
but never does it calm.
It always struggles;
moving as I clutch it harder;
rending my heart in two.
Always mauling,
writhing,
tearing,
shredding.
And yet I love it.

Alone.
Such an elegant word.
I wrap it around myself
like a cloak,
even though it burns my skin
in every place it touches.
I cling closer and it caresses me,
but it always sears.
Flowing around me like
isolated, water
in a dead wind.
Burning without flames.
Never going out,
Always scorching,
charring,
flaming.
And yet I love it.

Pain.
Such a tempting word.
I hold it close around me
like a blanket,
even though it kills me,
luring me with agony.
I bring it tighter and it closes in,
encasing me; always hurting,
endless pain engulfing me;
lashing me
with tender whips of
lost love.
Devastating,
sweet,
beautifully
desecrating.
And yet I love it.

Nothing is more painful than realizing he meant everything to you, but you meant nothing to him. (Unknown)

Thank you voce2bheard. It's always wonderful to hear that my poetry is appreciated and I hope that my future poems will be on par with this (and hopefully exceed).

A thoughtful write, and wistfully, beautifully composed. However, to paraphrase a semi-famous movie line, "Clawed, scorched, and whipped is no way to go through life, child..."

So often we hold our pain close, thinking no one else will understand, that we can never get over it.  But we are only prolonging our own pain.
