               I have lost,
             And own defeat.
          Dead hopes lie shattered
                At my feet.

           Though tender hands
            Would fain adjust
             Into some form
           Their crumbling dust,

             I may but stand
          With grief-bowed head,
             And weep alone
             Above my dead.
