It is buried rather deeply
In my far away recall,
The little paper Christmas tree
We had when I was small.
It had metal candle holders
On the end of each thin bough.
How it looked when it was lighted
I cannot remember now.
Perhaps one blaze of glory
With my daddy standing by
With a bucket full of water
If the flame should get too high.

A flash of recognition
When I saw it on the show
Of the antiques and mementos
From the years of long ago.
My brothers would remember,
They're no longer here to ask,
But covering it with baubles
Would have been my mama's task.
I can see her bravely working
Barely holding back the tears
At the scarcity of presents
In those dark depression years.

With the love that was wrapped with them
I doubt we children ever knew
Gifts of that early Christmas
Were both trivial and few.

It sure sounds like they were anything but trivial, for they were obviously wrapped with love and yielded many fond memories.
An enjoyable read, thank you for sharing.

Joyce,  that is a very beautiful and touching Christmas poem.  It reminds us that not all Christmas came from a store, and I bet you were very happy with the gifts of love you received.

Have a very Merry Christmas.

Love  W. Tracey.

Thanks dear Joyce for your lovely Christmas poem, I too can remember those Christmas's when the presents were very conspicuous by their absence, but the ones we did get were certainly wrapped in love, and love to you my friend.

This is a lovely poem, Joyce. Sometimes presents mean more when they are harder to come by. My Mom and Dad both grew up in the depression and I remember many stories about that time.

I wish my parents were here to appreciate this writing....they would surely understand.
My dad passed away in 2000 and my mom has such dementia she has no clue what Christmas is all about now, much less have memories as these. Thank you for your words.

I really liked this one a lot.  It had a very good flow to it, even if it got a little bumpy at times.

Very emotional, in fact it choked me up a little (I'm pretty sentimental about things like this).

Nice work,
