Mi Casa

It’s not my choice this Sunday afternoon,
but they’re both in the mood for Mex,
and he’s home from boot camp this one day.
“Mi casa Es Su Casa,” says the bare wood door,
hand carved a long, long time ago
by that old guy, right there in the corner.
He doesn’t know I know he owns the place.

His casa is my casa for today, and lots of days;
there’s always a crowd, even Sundays,
when there’s no mandatory Mexipolka
serenade from the local guitaristas.
We wade in through the scent;
it’s taken decades’ worth of warm burritos
just to build the atmosphere in here.

We won’t have many more of these,
we’re getting old, the doctors will decree
the way they always do; someday we’ll listen.
It won’t be the same when he’s gone anyway,
and that will be so soon. For now we talk
about the first time, try to remember
which team had a banquet here, and when.

Now he’s on another team,
and so are we. We have today
and though the rest will come,
today will be enough.
The choice, not mine, is made;
the future, never chosen, that will be,
and mi casa es su casa, for today.

mi casa es su casa is one of the most warm, kind and generous expressions we can say and hear in this often cold and detached societies of ours.

This is a very beautiful and also very poignant write, dear Ratleader.

Yes, it may not be ever the same when he will be gone, but the memories will last and warm your hearts.

Love,
Margherita

The first three stanzas had me--totally.

My New Orleans is Oldawlins, so I understand the nostalgic angst.

Maybe you could enlighten me on the last verse? *shrug*

I dunno.

I was ticked off that our Popeyes was replaced by Taqueria thingie place, but then? Oh man...forget Taco Bell.

And their little chihuaha too!

Good work again, Ed. You had me seeing through your eyes there, and I could feel the the familiar grain of the wood.

It's good to see you writing,
and to know the family was together
for a weekend...

You've given us a wonderful glimpse of family, of tradition... and of the pinches your heart feels, knowing times are a'changing. The nest isn't empty yet, but twigs don't fit quite like they used to. *S*

Thank you for taking us to lunch... This filled the senses. *S*
