I Be Not Fooled
by Linda L. Dowd

Upon mine virgin tongue I taste thy brine,
As tears doth fall from thy wanton eyes.
If thou shouldst but give from love ~ not loins of lust,
Then ye wouldst ne'er need wail in pine.

If thy passions stemmed from deepest part of soul,
I wouldst unfold mine sacred self to thy seeking hands,
Giving of mine self with proffer of gold bands,
Then we wouldst join as one as bells do toll.

But I be not fooled by liquid pools,
That weaken maids less fair than I.
With strength of pride, and virtues high,
~ Without respect, mine passion cools.

regardless of Elizabethan, Victorian, or modern times, is this not a prayer uttered most commonly:

"If thou shouldst but give from love ~ not loins of lust,"

...nicely done

Even Shakespeare would be envious of your ability to write poetry my dear, be that as it may, I still like your rhyming poetry the best. Have a happy day dear Linda. Love.

This is just beautiful, Linda. I do love the way you write. I like the line that starts out with "But I Be Not Fooled".

My Angelo Terrestre has travelled back into the eighteenth century and shows us the perfectly romantic write of a fair maiden of those times ... The picture is so lovely too.

Those tears do they not show that love is there?

Of course an Angel can't be fooled!

Love and hugs.

Linda...Your poem makes me wonder many things...

How does one seperate love from lust?

Are these ambiguous terms somehow mutually exlusive and easily seperated and discerned by a fair maiden?

Why is lust 'bad' and 'love' good?

When a man offers marraige, and a gold band, and delays having sex until the night after the wedding bells toll..
...is that evidence of love?

How does one measure the 'depth' of an emotion, and where it comes from, in a 'soul'?

Do women lust or only men?

Perhaps men and women are different when it comes to mating needs and strategies?

What do you suppose accounts for those differences?

Just some things your poem made me think about...
