I Wonder If He Knew

How does one put their heart aside
When doing the kind of work I do?
I told him I was leaving last night, that
I would see him this morning too

Just as I started to drift off to sleep
I received that dreadful call
My sweet little man was no longer here
He wouldn't see me after all

I hold back the tears as I think of him
Remembering when he could walk
The little journey's we would take
And, all those times he actually talked

I can't help but wonder, if he knew
How much I really and truly cared
I always looked forward to Fridays
The day I would be going there

I know I must say that final goodbye
But, goodbyes are always hard for me
My dear, sweet little man I'll miss you
Still I'm glad you are now pain free

Again you moved me deeply, dear Sue, with this compassionate write. Yes, I do believe too, that your little man did know how much you cared and now he knows even better!

I understand this totally, Sue, having taken care of several in their last days, and know how attached one becomes. Condolences, my friend. (He knew. )

Oh, yes, Sue, he knew - as we all do.  You certainly do have a very difficult job.
