Field Tested

Grief is destructive

Pebble by pebble
From precariously stacked
Grains of sand
A wall is erected

Cell upon layered cell
Skin is reconstructed
To protect fragile feelings

But grief erases progress
Crumbles fortifications

Anger and resentment
Boil forth
From unseen sources

Lack of faith and despair
Rip away scabs,
Open new scars

Alone in a storm,
Battered by the gale
There seems to be no shelter
And no hope of survival

But calm does come
And you arise warily
To greet another day

Twisted, torn,
Beaten, betrayed
Irrevocably changed

You embrace the fact

You did
Not

break

Ruth, I see by the comment you wrote, that the anniversaries of your parents' passings are this week ~ with your father's being today. Yes, a time for reflection and your poem shows that you have been working through your grief ~ and you have not broken. Your spirit is strong ~ and it most assuredly has been tested over these past few years.

You are quite the poetess ~ and woman.

Love
Linda

Oh, can I relate to this, Ruth. You said it better than I ever could but I have felt grief in just this way.

I think the anger is a defense too.  I could have used it.  I could have used any defense, but there wasn't one.  My big brother, Mom and Daddy, all gone.  And now it seems like half the people I went to school with.  I feel like they're going away and abandoning me in an increasingly narrow world. I like your poem, it made me think.  Well done.

grief is a hard emotion
holding your hand as you miss your mother and father today

many things have tested you
we may bend
but you did not break

you are in my prayers and i hope things are getting back to somewhat normal for you
what a fine woman you are

suthern,

You spoke to me with this poem.  Thank you.  Your timing is impeccable (ible?) -- sighs and goes to look up how to spell the word ... Aw, I had it right the first time.  You know, life as a speller was a lot easier when I was young and lived at home with my Mother.

Anyway, thank you for sharing.

Just as ripples in the stream from a stone tossed, time calms the waters and allows us to see the reflections more clearly.  That is when we should print the image in our mind.  Enjoyed reading you again.

Dear Ruth - Grief is such a tangible thing and so hard to let go of.  Perhaps we never can let it go but to come into awareness as evidenced by your last words is the place we need to be - i.e. in the knowing of our own strength and fortitude.  We sometimes have to learn things the hard way but I wish it wasn't so.

It's hard to say that I enjoyed your poem but I did and I know you'll understand that I'm referring to the expression only and not the grief.

Hello my sweet friend. I just wanted to stop by to let you know you're in my thoughts and prayers as you reflect upon the wonderful memories you have of your dear parents. I can only imagine this grief you wrote of, now, but I know it will come. My Mother was 86 in August, 2008 and my Dad was 87 in August, 2008.

I think of you and my other friends here at PIP often. I love you all.
Hugs and God bless,

wonderful writing, Ruth

Sometimes I have to remind myself when "thinking too much" that I am still here on earth and  need to go on despite the many disappointments, losses and heartaches

Hope you are coping better
