Lumpy oatmeal makes me crazy!

0 posted 2008-11-09 02:01 AM

You wore a white and pink chef’s hat,
cocoa smudged on your cheek
as you held the mixer in your six year old hands
all by yourself.  You measured and sifted
while I dutifully carried ingredients to you
and did dishes wearing your plastic princess crown.

You carefully measured the flour,
using a butter knife to level off the top of the cup
and we talked about quarter cups and what they meant.
You were puzzled until we discussed quarters and dollars
and then you smiled brightly and nodded wisely.

I want you to learn that cakes don’t come from boxes
and frosting does not come from cans.
I want you to feel the elasticity of bread dough under your fingers
and to smell yeast as it grows and feeds on a bit of sugar.
Mostly, I want you to have confidence
that you can create your dreams all by yourself.

I smile as I watch you grow and hope against hope
that you slow down just a little bit and wait for me.
I want you to always carry the thrill of fairies, and magic,
and hundreds of sprinkles on a chocolate cake you baked.

You are magic and I am forever your lovely assistant.

Alison, what a lovely influence you are having
on the life of that precious little girl.

God bless you both!

That must be an angel cake since it is being
baked by two angels!

I felt like I was there baking as well Alison, enjoyed this and the love it carried. A lovely age for a child, I remember when my daughter was that age needing knowledge and experiences, I asked here years ago, where's my baby gone, she said all growed up dad, now she is 18 years old and I wonder where the years have gone. Enjoyed this my friend, be well and love happy.

You sound like me, Alison. When my little great granddaughter is here (she's 4 the 23rd of this month) we make playdough and bake cupcakes and cookies etc. and I teach her to measure ingredients while we're at it. She loves it. This is a lovely poem. Save it for her. She will treasure it someday.

Oh, dear Alison, what a huge amount of tenderness and wisdom you have packed into this one!

It is joyous, yet poignant too. And a keeper!

I love it, there is more to it than might appear even.

Love,
Margherita

This had tears - some happy, some sad - coursing down my cheeks for many, many reasons.

Beautiful topic, beautiful poem, beautiful cake, beautiful baker(ess) and beautiful assistant.

Yo dear Alison,

That child is too young to be working.  Are there no child labor laws up there?

LOL at Bobby's reply.
Alison, this write is a keeper for my library, one to 'taste' and cherish long after the frosting is licked clean from the plate.

A truly delightful poem, Alison.  I recently unearthed my baking skills from the archives and actually enjoyed using them.  Won't make a habit of it though.

Oh Alison, that is such a cute poem
and what a delightful little girl.

I'm sure with you as teacher, she will grow up to be a wonderful cook. Congratulate her for me and tell her if I didn't live so far away, I'd call in for a bite.

Love to you and the little girl.

Kate,

Thank you so much, lady friend.  I bought my muse a surf board and we just sail along together.  So far, she has been patient with me.

Good to see you dropping in.

A sweet slice of both cake and life.
Images come off the page and can almost smell the aroma of the cake throughout the house here as I sit and read the sweetness.
