As I sit here in my rocking chair, and watch the days pass by,
I wonder if my dreams, and memories will ever die,
Each day seems like forever, and never wants to end,
But soon, I feel, I’ll leave this chair, and my earthly friends,
It’s been some time since I lost my Love, yet her life is all around,
Although her body’s gone, she is part of me, to her spirit I am bound,
I hope that when I pass that way, you won’t mourn and cry,
Just look upon it as fulfillment of this beautiful life,
For when I get to Heaven, I know whom I shall see,
My Wife, loved ones, and family, waiting patiently,

A surge of pain shoots through my heart, as I fall short of breath,
The time has come, for me to go, to my Eternal rest.

These same thoughts paas through all our minds as the years advance on us and we remember those who are no longer with us. You are not alone.

I wrote this 35 years ago when I was in the Army.  I was not old or married.  I do remember seeing a very old retired army officer sitting on his porch every day we went by when stationed in Fort Sill, OK. Then one day he was no longer there.

I just found it in my old army records and thought I would post it.
Hope it doesn't sound to morbid.

Thanks for the thoughts, Ida, The poem seems to fit now, like you say, as we get closer to the inevitable.

enjoyed your write...when I was young, I used to ask, "Are we there yet?"  The older I get (and closer to the other shore) I find myself asking again, "Are we there yet?"

This is a melancholic, but contemporaneously soothing write, dear Tracey.

Very beautiful, you really heard the soul whispers of that person! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Love,
Margherita
