Homecoming Hayride
By: Noah Eaton
10/10/08

“Veedon Fleece” suffused the heartland,
that early October day,
when we had smiles free of crows feet,
regaling through that corn maze.

On the back of a 1906 Case steam tractor,
all gussied up in our dungarees,
I was Tom Sawyer, you were Becky Sue,
exchanging promised land fantasies…

I restlessly wander, grasping for my youth,
where poplars burn like flaming torches all too soon,
and the trees begin their betrayal again…

…but through this illustration of time passing by,
I see a mosaic of your face speckling the hillside,
as the trees begin their betrayal again…

We knew less the more we saw,
journeying along on that rutted trail,
now that I see things so clearly,
I’m left scrambling for pieces swept by autumn’s gale…

As the cornstalks turn auburn,
and the fireflies dwindle to none,
capriciously I drift like a flock of golden plovers,
chasing the cruel sun.

I restlessly wander, grasping for my youth,
where poplars burn like flaming torches all too soon,
and the trees begin their betrayal again…

…but through this illustration of time passing by,
I see a mosaic of your face speckling the hillside,
as the trees begin their betrayal again…

You told me autumn is our second spring,
where every leaf is a flower in full swing,
how could a biting wind,
take hostage of our genial breeze.

I restlessly wander, grasping for my youth,
where poplars burn like flaming torches all too soon,
and the trees begin their betrayal again…

…but through this illustration of time passing by,
I see a mosaic of your face speckling the hillside,
as the trees begin their betrayal again…
.
.
.
.
.
I restlessly wander, grasping for my youth,
where poplars burn like flaming torches all too soon,
and the trees begin their betrayal again…

…but through this illustration of time passing by,
I see a mosaic of your face speckling the hillside,
as the trees begin their betrayal again…
.
.
.
.
.
I restlessly wander, grasping for my youth,
where poplars burn like flaming torches all too soon,
and the trees begin their betrayal again…

…but through this illustration of time passing by,
I see a mosaic of your face speckling the hillside,
as the trees begin their betrayal again…

First of all, a big welcome back hug, dear Noah!! I was waiting for you, you were very much missed!

quote:
You told me autumn is our second spring,
where every leaf is a flower in full swing,
how could a biting wind,
take hostage of our genial breeze.

You wrote a very captivating poem! A song it is!

Noah,

Yay!  You posted a poem again - and it's a poem (lyrics) I fell in love with.  I think the picture is most excellent and perfect with your words.

Yep, I am happy to see you again.

Hi there you!  Loved your picture, and of course your poem.  Hope life is treating you well?  Your writing has matured Noah, and I sure enjoyed this hayride with you and yours.  By the way, this touched a sensitive chord with me by the way
I restlessly wander, grasping for my youth,
where poplars burn like flaming torches all too soon,
and the trees begin their betrayal again…

Take care Noah, and welcome back.
