bring forth the royal diadem and crown him lord of all…

little gods do not walk
they stride
faces to the sky so angels may look upon them and sigh
earthly mortals follow quietly in their golden wake
happy only to be there
wafting on the breeze of royal indulgence

little gods tell you their eyes are glorious blue
more lovely than your best lace panties
those you bought at full price
not realizing they would not please

for nothing is good enough for little gods

little gods demand altars
blue and pink and vaguely green
bowers where their praises are sung
by cigarette smoke
and candlelight

little gods expect bejeweled thrones
in emerald and ruby
where they can sit to tell their tales
while mortals kneel
grasping at their feet
gathering their precious words
to examine later
in the quiet of their lonely beds

we all know little gods are not really gods
but we help them maintain the illusion

for to deny them their diadems
is to deny ourselves

that one last royal chance

Wow, nice writing , Lady. Though I don't find the "little gods" all that appealing, I love the poem.

Wow, Kate!  "You sure do tell it like it is!"  Your poem is brilliantly written in every little nuance of it and the powerpunch of it in its entirety, but oh so esPECially the ending (except that I am not sure what chance you meant in the last 2 lines)!  I hope writing and posting the poem was very cathartic.  Uriah's response is delightful too!

The most immediate problems that spring to mind with little (tin) gods is their illusion of greatness that you allude to; that they believe that we believe it too; that none of them would recognise themselves as little tin gods; and the damage they do to themselves and their temporary subjects; and the damage they do to any permanent subjects.

wow...what a ride...from Perronet's classic lyrics as an opening to retail lace panties (personally never imagined I would ever see the two linked together in any writing)

my favorite part was "faces to the sky so angels may look upon them and sigh" ...now that was hypercool

So many little gods that strut this earth.
When they find out they are not a god they fall and weep....
"Why Me? What have I done to receive this lowly fate? My people no longer bow to me.
Oh! Why me?"

unwrapping was my pleasure stranger darlin'

oh Diana they do such damage to themselves, don't they?
I think the last lines mean our last chance to relate to them in any way

ahhh Steaven you just never know where I will go... sacred to wicked
thank you so much

I say let them weep Bonnie!
thank you

Impressive write about a species of "gods" that I too despise.

I do appreciate your sharp pen, dear Kate!
