Just beyond the breakers at Rockaway Beach,
stands an imposing shoreline sentinel
locals and tourists call Twin Rocks.
But I nicknamed these natural rock formations
my Pacific Rock Nessie,
for they are naturally sculpted
in the shape of a winsome sea dragon.
My Rock Nessie guards this bit of coastline
playfully but with great dignity.
On damp foggy mornings
she capriciously plays hide-and-seek,
daring me to capture her
with my camera lens.
When boisterous waves dance about her,
she holds her head high,
digs her feet deep into the sand.
My Nessie has no fear, no need to hide
from would-be mercenaries
who would greedily turn her into
an Amusement Park if they could.
My Pacific Rock Nessie
stood solidly on this Oregon shore
thirty years ago for me
while I flew handmade kites
in the brisk winds of early summer.
She stands strong today,
no doubt will still be there
when all those new condos
up on the hill crumble.
I salute you,
My Pacific Rock Nessie!

Marge, glad to see you here! No, I never took a boat out beyond the waves in that location.
It's a tricky coastline. But when the tide is out you can get a bit closer, and this Nessie is truly magnificent!
Yann, thank you. That part of Oregon holds many fond memories for me. I have spent hundreds of hours strolling that beach, collecting driftwood and rocks, and flying kites.

I normally object to the inclusion of most photo. images (believing that the 'word painted' imagery
should suffice; but, this one seems rather necessary and appropriate in support of the 'write'!)

fine and interesting 'penning'...about this particular 'Deep-Time dragon'...

MUCH applause!!

This is so typical of the Oregon Coast and it's many beautiful rock formations. There's no place like it. Ihe Oregon Coast is very special to me, too. Love the poem and the picture.

Thanks Bruce, Bobby, Ida.
Ida, then you've seen the 'haystack' at Cannon Beach, and the rest of that magnificent coastline. It has the power to stay in your mind and heart forever.

I love this! Your words had described it all,
but the photo is a blessing in the skies...

I oft-times see more into a stationary object
and I'm glad you do, too!

Hi Karilea
You see things in stationary objects because you're an artist. I believe all philosophers, poets, writers, sculptors, painters...all artists in general open their hearts and minds to truly 'see' the world beyond the limits of the 3D 'normal' range.

Great photo with words to match dear Kacy,
I've been to Oregon a couple of times but

didn't see much of the coastline, but what we did see looked pretty good to me. Love

At Delphi, a carved marble copy of a sculpture originally located at the temple of Apollo is called the Navel of the Universe by Delphians, because to them it represented the center of the earth. Israelites felt Solomon’s Temple was built on the navel of the universe, and Muslims believe the sacred black stone at Mecca marks of the earth’s center. Many of us have that orientation toward our own physical/emotional touchstone based on a special place that reconnects us with the earth. Thank you for sharing yours and your experience of it with us, Midnitesun.

If you happen to visit the Pacific Northwest again, it's well worth the drive from northern California all the way up to the Olympic peninsula in Washington. Then why stop there? Vancouver Island is great, and the entire coast of British Columbia is gorgeous. Take the inside passage all the way to Skagway Alaska via the Alaska Marine Highway.  I'm sounding like a travel guide now, eh?
Thank you for your wonderfully astute comments, ArtSolstice. As always, you bring great depth of understanding.

Yes Kacy, we went to Vancouver and Vancouver Island and then up through the Rockies to Calgary to see the Calgary Stampede, via Bampf and Lake Louise. Wonderful trip. Highly recommended.

Kacy, I love your beautiful Loch Ness Non-monster and your freshly birthed poem tasting of sea air and the delightful comments.  I enjoyed ArtSolstice's in particular, having been passionately in love with Ancient Greece from the age of 8, but I particularly-particularly enjoyed your and Karen's comments about riding her!

Yes!  I hadn't thought of the fact that Nessie is a little larger than we are and that we could all ride at the same time!

Sorry about not having one or more extra large saddles.  I gave Flicka's saddle away when he went to Heaven, as I knew he would have wanted that - and his was normal-sized anyway so it wouldn't have fitted your Nessie!

Sharon, many people bypass Rockaway Beach, and just go to Cannon Beach, Lincoln city or Newport.
Rockaway is just a 20 minute drive from Tillamook, where the cheese factory is located. And Garibaldi is a great little town along the way that has the greatest Myrtlewood shop!
Whenever you decide to go to Rockaway, let me know and I'll give you directions to a magnificent Old Growth tree on 40 acres of Nature Conservancy land at the edge of town. It's magnificent, and only takes a few minutes level hiking on a fairly well defined path to see this wonderful natural gift.
