When autumn's red and russet days
Grow chill and lose the warming rays
That set the leaves on trees ablaze
With hues intense,
Harsh winter lies - and sings its praise -
Lost innocence.

It bares the limbs of sleeping trees
And kills the balmy, autumn breeze
Till sodden ground begins to freeze
And flowers die.
As days get colder by degrees
Much worse is nigh.

Then mesmerising falling snow
Drifts gently to the earth below
And rivers stop their constant flow -
White stillness reigns.
Then feel the icy blizzards blow
To chill the veins.

A dream-like state invades the mind
As bodies freeze and eyes go blind
And storms blow hard, with more behind,
To steal the soul.
The winter challenges mankind
To lose control.

With reason lost or in suspense
Hypnotic silence steals the sense,
And nothing's offered, just pretence,
Against the chills.
We have no answer, no defence
As winter kills.

For countless years we have evolved
And countless problems have we solved
But never once have we resolved
This wint'ry death.
Nor will this failure be absolved
With our last breath.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Dylan Thomas

Beautiful! I love that white stillness! I enjoyed reading your Winter poem, dear David. Btw, hi! Nice to meet you!

The only Winter death I am grateful for is that of the mosquitos, so there is peace for a few months!

I have experienced -20° Celsius and it wasn't fun, but oh the beauty of the white pure blanket over the hills ...

Love,
Margherita

They can say all they want about poetry not having to rhyme,  I love to read it when it does.  The changing verse, the story, the absolute truth and the chilling end.  Briliant, Wonderful.

I so enjoy your poetry, David. This is just beautiful and I also like poetry that rhymes.

Hi there David~

This is a wonderful rendition of Mother natures' finery and fury!

I so enjoyed the crisp and concise feel of your winter write.

Well, if I didn't know Winter in the UK before, I certainly feel that I do now.

I personally prefer contemporary poetry not to rhyme - unless it is done as superbly as you do on every occasion, but this time you went beyond "superbly" - this was masterfully done.  Your rhyme and rhythm and images and concepts blended into a chilling (in every sense of the word) entity of the harshness and finality and inescapability of Winter that soaks through the skin to the soul.
