ARCHES
(Won’t stand forever)

Beauty, grace and majesty,
In brilliant red sandstone,
Start as just a mound of dirt,
Their glory yet unknown.

Through years and years of toil,
Mother Earth did her handy work,
She did not know what lay beneath,
Hidden marvels where they lurk.

Then one by one the sands recede,
And left for all to see,
Are marvelous arches great and tall,
The grandeur, hard to believe.

Time moves on with no respect,
To the treasures we adore,
The mighty arches come tumbling down,
Standing proud no more.

Sands of time keep changing,
Like the snow-white clouds on high,
And like the clouds and life itself,
They slowly drift on by.

This poem was inspired by the fall of the great "Wall Arch" at Arches National Park in Utah.  The Arch fell on August 5th 2008.

I was reminded of my favourite sonnet "Ozymandias" when I read this; the story of how even the most magnificent man-made structures crumble to nothing. A great poem to make people think.
