In foreign fields the blood was spilt,
The flower of youth was slain;
So many lives, so many dreams.
Was each one lost in vain?
What price the victory?

Those young men marched off into Hell;
Their cause, they said, was just.
Now countless bones have filled the earth
And graves outnumber dust.
There was no victory.

If mothers' tears and young girls' sighs
Could wash away the past
Then vast batallions of souls
Would not have breathed their last.
They had no victory.

We fought the war to end all wars
So pointless deaths could cease.
We sacrificed our shining youth
So now where is the peace?
Where is the victory?

I wonder how long it will take humanity to figure out that there is no victory. We don't seem to be making much progress. This speaks well of the futility of war.

Yo TheAnonDavid,

I don’t agree with this at all.  

My father came back from WW II a broken man.  He was always proud of his war service, because he knew he helped defeat Hitler.  

You should thank your lucky stars my father went to war, so you don’t have to live in a totalitarian state.

So many times I have had these same thoughts.
Where Is The Victory?
We still have wars, crime in the streets, hunger, poverty, slavery.
The goverments of the land scream Peace.
But our young our dead. No solice for the weeping one.
Your writings bring out the words that I do not say out loud. For I am a quiet one, with feelings that run as deep as any ocean on this planet called Earth.
I cry in silence......

Thank you for all the positive comments.
And Bobby, my father too fought in WW2 as did many members of my family; some never came home and some returned as broken men, as you so perfectly described it. On the American side of my family I have those who fought in every conflict from WW2 to Vietnam.
My poem does not make light of such brave and noble men. What I am saying is that our fathers sacrificed themselves because of our leaders and politicians. I am praising the heroes of all nationalities but I feel so angry that they had to die through no faults of their own.
War should not be glorified like 'blood and thunder' John Wayne movies. People don't die in a movie. Countries dont submit to genocide in a movie. After the shooting in a movie, the actors get together for coffee or in a bar. So, what price the victory?

Hello David, as you point it there is no victory in war, the victory would be to sit around a table and speak to avoid a war, these successful talks are the only victories...

thank you for sharing a thoughtful and beautiful poem...

David,
It's with great pride that i read your words
I may only be a teenger and know very little about the prospects of war but i must also ask myself Where is the victory?.. each day innocent civillians and soldiers die in a war or a battle that we've been told is for good.. and i keep asking myself time and time again how tragic deaths will it take us to see that the victory doesn't exist and the battles may never be won

Great poem btw..

In 2002 what could have been a very bloody war was avoided in my country, South Africa, thanks to Nelson Mandela and others sitting around a table, as Yann put it.  

Another one has been avoided (I hope) in Zimbabwe.  It is my personal belief that our South African President Mbekhi should have achieved that far sooner, but at least and at last Morgan Tsvangirai and Mugabe have signed an agreement, the details of which we will only hear on Monday, if we are lucky.

Thank you for your poem.  We need to get all the world agreeing.  I believe it is possible, but we need to start within our own homes, then schools, work places, communities building the qualities that will produce the people capable of seeing it, believing it and putting it into action.
