"why do you enjoy reading?"
he asked with a smile
dancing upon the corners
of his mouth

She glanced up, just for a brief moment
to reply
"it is the only escape I know of."

His mocking eyes enjoyed the answer
it was what he was waiting for
the chance to pounce on
every verb or noun that left her tongue

"escape, ha, I cant even finish a page."
His statement roared from his chest
as if the judgement had ruled
only in his favor

Her eyes didnt sway from the
words that drifted to and from
her free plane ticket
to view the world

"reading isnt for everyone, I suppose."
too consumed she didnt even waste
one moment of rebuttle(sp?) on the
most passionate subject she knew

Dear Melissa, I can relate to this and find you have spoken my heart too ... we do need to "escape" sometimes and this is indeed the wisest way I know of too ... it is a true blessing.

Wonderful and wise!

Love from another "Leseratte" (just found the English word for this: bookworm or avid reader)

The beautiful thing about the human mind is that it can travel fom the heavems to the depths in mere moments and then fly away on a new adventure whenever it wishes.

(p.s. I think the word you are looking for is "rebuttal")
A lovely poem as always.

Tis true that reading isn't for all but I would agree that the ones who don't are missing out on much.  This analogy you used ...

Reading may not be for everyone, Melissa, just us lucky ones. I think you speak very well for all of us "readers"
