Uncertainty

It's 6:00 AM Suzy, no need to get up.
I have grown older and you are no pup.
What is your hurry? Why not lie abed?
We've no pressing duties
in this long day ahead.

Oh well, if I must I will open the door.
You seem so eager to go and explore.
You want to know who has invaded your space,
as with nose down, you're running
all over the place.

The mouse who stole food from your dish has been caught,
because he did something that he hadn't ought.
I only half-heartedly baited the trap.
I thought him a brave and quite
cheeky young chap.

I accept as God's gift this new day that's begun
and look for some urgent, small tasks to be done.
With our breakfasts over and dishes washed too,
you're napping already
with nothing to do.

While I, as a human, am not made that way.
Though arising too early, awake I must stay.
For I know that summer is not here to last.
I must use or lose it,
time's moving too fast.

You think you're immortal, I know that I'm not.
This life I am living is all that I've got.
My life has been happy, I'd live it again,
but joys of today are
all filtered throuh pain.

I envy your living in only the now.
I'd like to do that, if I only knew how.
The lot of the human is living with fear
that as soon as tomorrow
she may not be here.

Joyce, you penned your conversation with your dog so well, that I felt I was a peeping Tom and an eavesdropper.

Two things that I know with 'certainty' are that you're a sweetheart and a charming poetess!

Love you!

Yo Joyce,

You're not imortal--who on earth told you that?  Just think of the ideas people come up with.

This works very well, and the end rhymes are very well done.

Bobby

Thank you Linda Lou and Bobby for listening in on my little chat with Susie.  It's hard to get a response from her.  Love, Joyce

You express so well the feelings many of us have as we grow older. I have much the same conversation with my cats (who are getting older too) but, like your dog, they don't realize it or worry about it. I just hope I outlive them. (my daughter has five cats of her own).

Very very beautiful, dear Joyce, but oh, trust your pet when you perceive he thinks himself immortal. You are a child of eternity. I strongly believe we shall continue to exist, even after the moment of discarding our earthly form.

Enjoyed your poem greatly.

Love,
Margherita

You have already proved your immortality by leaving such wonderful poems like this to be read over and over again.

Joyce, I loved your poem and all the responses (especially Bobby's and Margherita's).  Just sad about the little mousie, though.  Please pat and hug Suzie for Auntie Di from sunny South Africa and pass on friendly woofs from Daisy and friendly meeows from Tigger.
