If I could tell a joyous tale
when death is in the driving seat -
or raise a raucous laugh or two
as lights go out on empty worlds;

and if my conscience told my eyes
to shed no tears, to turn away
from children dying in the streets
then I would be on par with kings
and princes and prime ministers.

At last I would have earned the right
to walk among immortal souls
who learn in early life to grasp
what is not theirs - and not to care.

The meek possess the earth, they say,
for they are blessed. The pure in heart
shall walk on paths divine and true.
But while divinity and right
emit their saintly radiance
the mighty stride across the land
and take by force what is not theirs.

The heady days of liberty
have guttered like a candle in
a hurricane. The gates that once
were open to admit the tired and poor
are firmly closed and bolted fast.

The wretched refuse, tempest tossed,
can no more find the golden door.
The only gold that matters now
is stacked for gloating eyes to see.

Once freedom was the pinnacle
For which the nations stood and fought;
But now those dreams are torn and burnt
And all that's left for us to do
Is crawl among the ash and weep.

"The heady days of liberty
have guttered like a candle in
a hurricane."
That verse blew me away...

This is quite a powerful write, David, and sadly, rings true globally.

A powerful indictment against these abuses, David. A real pleasure to read and accept as a challenge for change.
