A shrill cry
made me
look to the sky,
where a hawk
was attacking
a starling

A dull thud
made me look
to the ground,
where the injured
starling had fallen

A shrill cry
was heard
to come from
the bird whenever
it tried to return
to the sky

Without pre-
conceived notions
I watched every
motion and waited
to be shown
the "why"

For three days
I watched as
the fallen fowl
struggled through
it's trauma

A dull thud
announced
that the cat
had pounced
and brought an
end to the drama

An easy meal
prepared for a
starving soul.
The table and stage
were set by Grace.
I sat on the porch,
sipping soup from
my bowl, with a smile
upon my face.

Amazing job.

i would love to be able to write about something as simple as the downfall of an animal so purely.

The last verse i really enjoy. great imagery.

as i've said before, i strongly believe in subtelty and simplicity as essential aspects in writing.

Great job.

i hope to see more.

PS. Great title, by the way!

I think I would have been crying in my soup even though I understand the ways of life and grace.  It's a good write, my friend!

I would have been crying with Helen even though I understand too. I like the poem though.

And Margherita IS crying together with Helen and Ida, though she knows too ... will never get used to it.

So sad, but you said it so well, dear Larry.

Although I understand the ways of nature, it still can be very upsetting to my sensibilities. It's dinnertime here and I was in the mood for a nice bowl of soup, so I was surprised when I saw your title. I thought, aha! Let's see what Larry's cookin' up! Oh, my! This wasn't quite what I expected!

I think I'll be crying in my soup...

Oh, dear! I just had a horrible thought!

Since, by the grace of God, Man's at the top of the food chain, did you add the cat to your soup?!? ~ Sorry, I have a weird sense of hooomah.
