Tiny scratches in the freshly turned soil
tell me the birds have been busy this afternoon
during my much-needed gardener’s coffee break.
Small seeds are no problem,
but it was obvious the ever-funny Sassy squirrel
has also been industriously planting black walnuts
in the walkway and flower beds,
as every step I take
lands on a round hard object.
The critters are telling me Fall is approaching,
though the thermometer still hovers daily
above 80 degrees Fahrenheit
here in USDA Zone 5.
I’m gazing at the spot
where my tree-of-choice will soon be planted,
wondering how many other seeds
might be stashed in the soft fertile earth.
There will be some disagreements,
but I’ve declared some areas
off-limits for Sassy’s stash.
After all, she already has
more than half the back yard.
We shall wait and see
who wins this round
when Autumn leaves
blanket the ground.

This is such fantastic, awesome harmony between you, even if apparently Sassy is trying to "invade" your area, she is saying she trusts you and loves you ...

Wonderful story, dear Kacy!

Love,
Margherita

Friends, that Sassy-squirrel planted another walnut in the walkway last night, thinking I must be 'finished' with that spot.
LOL, she will no doubt forget where she buried it, and not notice it's been re-located.

You know, I kind of think Sassy Squirrel will be giving you a run for your money on this territory issue.

I love this poem - it made me smile.  You know how persistent the squirrels are here.  And they have me wrapped around their tails.

You have reminded me of when I used to visit my grandparents' house. They had huge chestnut trees in their backyard and the squirrels would scurry in, around, and on top of them! I could watch them for hours. I used to draw pictures of them and their antics. I also remember having to pick up the chestnuts off the lawn before my grandfather would mow it.

I enjoyed your poem very much, Kacy. ~ and thanks for bringing up some fond memories for me!

The squirrel's eye-view of gardening is so different from ours, isn't it? Nice to know Sassy is still around and busy organizing for autumn and winter.

Linda, I'd love to hear more about 'your squirrels' antics! Do you still have some sketches to share????
ArtSolstice, it is nice to have Sassy and offspring camping out in the yard. They make me laugh with their tree-jumping and chattering!

another most interesting 'write' from a quite fine and talented author!

sustained applause for this 'penning'!

Dear Kacy that is such a joy to read.
Unfortunately we dont have any native

squirrels in Australia although I was very fortunate in being able to buy a pair of

Indian Palm Squirrels about twenty years
ago and from them I bred dozens of young ones. They were always a delight to watch
when playing. You also seem to enjoy their
antics.  great poem my dear. love

Lindsay
