Hip–hippity-hop; there’s a toad on the road
jumping the lanes left and right
and I on the sidelines watch perturbed
because I can foresee an oncoming life
not decreeing an end to the strife.

It’s like that toad is sightless in heart
and can’t know the left from the right
but toads bend low, hug the road,
and jump at inopportune times.

Toads cannot know that they have a soul
stuck to their backs like a knapsack
and that poor soul must jump, hop, skip,
in a manner contrary to
the plan for its future existence.

It’s not that I think that right is best
because left also has a camber and slope
that leads to a future existence
but I cannot move from the right of love
or speak to a toad on the road.

Watch out!  Watch out!  Can a toad hear
the voice of a woman who knows
existence is based on more than gold
or white painted lines on a road?

There’s a toad on the road with a soul
left/right, left/right, no truck in sight
and happily on it goes
but perhaps the next bend will show
a flattened old toad with no soul.

And a toad with no soul no happy sight
for this spectator of its plight
but I’m glued to the scene, I dream, you see;
‘tis the dreamer in me that knows!

I am reading this and it's giving me visions of that old video game Frogger. Somewhere out there, lays a very flat green pancake on the blacktop... and I think there's a knapsack stuck to the bottom of some truck's wheel.

Good analogies here. Raises the old question of whether or not all forms of life (including us) have a soul.

How perceptivwe you are to take notice of the seemingly unwitting actions of some otherwise unnoticed and unwise creatures of lesser creation.  Thank you for sharing with a perspective not often captured and also making us feel guilty next time we haplessly
devoid these road drawn creatures to a state of soulessness.

I do believe that every being that breathes has a soul. You show so much sensitivity with this poetic tale, dear Helen. Too many animals are not aware of the risks of roads and highways. It's sad.

Once I found a little bird fallen from a nest and tried to help it live, but it died in my hand with a tiny, tender "peep". I was moved to tears and felt really sadness. The next night I had a dream: the little bird sat on a hedge singing beautifully and next to him there was my beloved cat Mizar and also my favorite Uncle (both had passed on). There was total harmony in the scene and in the dream I exclaimed "oh, you are all together then!". I felt so peaceful after this dream and I often dream of my cat and of my Mother together. I am totally positive about those animals having souls.

Thank you for allowing me to remember, dear Helen. A beautiful insightful write, really.

Love,
Margherita

I agree with Margherita, dear Helen!-- Frogs are one of many creations from God...

Thank you everyone for your comments.  Very much appreciated.

Margherita - What a beautiful dream to have!  It's dreams like that that make us believe.  I wonder though - do you think they only come to those who truly "feel"?

Oh, yes, toads do seem to like the road but then again, the "toad" in this tale could perhaps be you or me or someone that we know.  It is a "frog muse" that is true but then again, perhaps it isn't.  There's mystery everywhere!

Love
Helen
